My Genealogical Goals for 2014

With the new year quickly approaching, I decided to make a list of genealogy goals I am going to strive to achieve in the coming year. With having begun researching my family tree well over thirteen years ago, I still have a lot to research. I've intentionally left different branches of my family un-researched, so that I'd continue to have research to do as the years went on. With how much research I have completed on my Hungarian ancestry (the majority of my research), I am far from done. A vast majority of that consists of nobility resources; there's a wealth of information to be found, and I'll likely need to conduct that research on-site in Hungarian archives. With all that being said, here is my list of goals for the new year:


1. Write more. I need to write more. A lot more. I've sorely neglected my several blogs during the year due to medical issues within the family. Things have gotten much better, and I'm regaining the time I'll be able to devote to writing. Apart from my blogs, I'm going to be dedicating a very large majority of my time to writing two books. They're going to be related to Hungarian genealogy, my area of expertise, and completely unrelated to one another. I can't go into much detail about what the books will be about yet, but know that both will be extremely helpful to any research being conducted within the former Hungarian empire.

2. The most important family for me to research this year, is the family of my 3rd-great-grandmother, Martha Ann Miller. She was the wife of James Andrew J. Costilow and died fairly young; 45 years before her husband passed. I was fortunate enough to have found a record that was a crucial breakthrough in Martha's family, which then lead me to her parents and half of her grandparents. I plan to focus a lot of attention on researching these new families.

3. I plan on indexing far more records relating to Győr city and county. It's the sixth largest city in Hungary, and the largest and most important city in northwest Hungary. It's very close to the borders of both Austria and Slovakia and is situated on one of the most important roads in Central Europe. Because of this, it was a large hub for migrants and immigration. There were six Roman Catholic parishes in Győr, comprised of 27 microfilms of data. So indexing marriage records for this city would be extremely beneficial for those researching in this area.

4. There are a handful of military organizations I would like to join. The main ones including the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution), General Society of the War of 1812, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Sons of Confederate Veterans. My goal is to obtain all the documentation required to apply for membership within these organizations. I could easily piggy-back other applicants with their membership numbers and previous documentation, but I want to do it on my own.

5. My Polish roots are aching to be discovered. I'm more Polish than anything else, yet the majority of the records aren't readily available for research. My lines from Barycz and Osobnica will be extremely difficult, as I'll have to physically write to the church and request information. It's a hit or a miss and I won't make much progress. Hence why I haven't touched at all in all the years I've been researching. Two sides that I do need to focus on, are my Adas and Domagalski families. The Adas' came from the Putzig parish and I've been able to research the family back to the 1750's so far, but the records began in 1593.. so there's LOTS to be discovered! I also need to figure out the collateral line to the Adas family, the Pletzke's. They're from a neighboring parish and there's also lots to be found.

6. I need to research my Stümpges line. Previous researchers had traced the family line back to the 1540's, but I'm not content. I need to research the family in the church records myself, and verify that the direct Stümpges line is correct. Almost all of the maternal lines are completely blank, also. Those need to be researched and known. There's so much information to be found here!

FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1908 Marriage of József Majoros & Anna Tóth in Ó-Fehértó

While doing some work on my Gombash line today, I was looking at the spouses of my great-grandfather's siblings; one of them being Michael Mayors. I know he was married to my great-grandfather's sister, Julia, on 09 Sep 1939 in Guernsey county, Ohio. Thanks to their marriage record, I knew Michael's exact birth date and the name of his parents: 18 Jun 1912 and Joseph Mayors (Majoros) & Anna Toth. Using that information, I tracked down their passenger manifest records via Ellis Island and located where they originally came from in Hungary: Ó-Fehértó, Szabolcs, Hungary. Food & Genealogy: What Did Your Ancestors Eat?

On my way home from the grocery store today, I began to wonder what foods some of my ancestors would have eaten. In our present day and age, we have such an enormous  amount of options to pick from at our grocery stores, some that we didn't have even just a few years ago (like the interesting Ugli fruit that I discovered last year, a native citrus from Jamaica). I started thinking of each ethnic culture of my diverse mutt-like ancestry, and what some of their well-known dishes were of their cuisine. And then I began to think.. which of these dishes existed prior to the discovery of the Americas?

Hungary:

Naturally, I'm going to begin with Hungary. How could I not? :) Whether you're Hungarian or not, you must know of their national dish known all around the world: goulash (gulyás in Hungarian); you can find my recipe here. Two of the main ingredients in gulyás, paprika and potatoes, didn't reach Hungary until well after the discovery of the Americas. Paprika, or peppers, were originally cultivated and found in tropical areas of the Americas, whereas the potato is known to have its origins in Peru.

Italy:
It's extremely hard to think of Italy and not think of pasta with homemade tomato sauce, or pizza with that bright red tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese and fresh basil. But neither existed prior to the discovery of the Americas; tomatoes are originally from the Andes mountain region. And then there's also polenta. That smooth, rich and creamy corn-meal dish made famous in Italy. Prior to the Old-World's discovery of corn/maize, they used various grains to make polenta; it sometimes included different kinds of flour, millet and spelt.

Poland:
Our dear, dear pierogies. I don't know anyone that doesn't like a good potato and onion pierogi; it's making me drool just thinking about it! As I mentioned above, the potato originated from Peru and was first cultivated by the Incas. So we must thank the ancient Incas for being the first to cultivate and hybridize the ancestors of our common potato. Did you know there's almost 4,000 varieties of potatoes?  Yum!

Ireland:
And the Irish! A genealogist hears potato, and they think of the Great Famine in Ireland, which spanned from 1845-1852. Many of you reading this article may be descendants of Famine emigrants; I know my uncle is!

If it weren't for the Incas, my uncle never would have been born.. and my grandmother may have never met my grandfather. Interesting to think about, huh?

Surname Saturday #27: Bódogh

The Bódogh family is by far my absolute favorite family I have ever researched, and am continually doing so. I became obsessed with anything to do with the Bódogh family in 2004, when I found within the Borsod county archives' nobility records, copies of nobility records pertaining to the Bódogh family's nobility investigation. It contained 118 documents full of details about the family.. and the best part, hand-drawn pedigrees of the Bódogh family tree! Genealogy Time Machine

If you're like myself, you're constantly wishing you could speak to a long-deceased ancestor. Even just for a minute or two. This happened to me tonight and it got me to thinking.. why not blog about it? So here are my absolute top three choices of who, when, where and why I would go back in time.

Who: My 2nd-great-grandmother, Eszter Tóth Gombás

When: October 1909

Where: Ellis Island

Why: According to family stories, she brought along with her while immigrating from Hungary to America, documents on her noble heritage and family tree. Within these documents was information detailing a family connection to a king from about 600 years ago. I know much of her ancestry, but I would do anything to know what details she knew on her noble Hungarian heritage.

Who: Hiram Howell

When: 1853

Where: Tippah County, Mississippi

Why: I want to know all the details of his murder! Why did his son-in-law, Lindsey Slaughter, shoot and kill him? And why wasn't he convicted of murder?

Who: My 3rd-great-grandmother, Ellen Hovis Martin

When: Late 1830's

Where: Lincoln County, North Carolina

Why: She was an illegitimate daughter of first cousins. She lived in a house with her mother and two other illegitimate children, on land that her paternal grandfather had specifically given to her mother.. to provide for her. Ellen's biological father died when she was only 5 years old. It would be amazing to peak into the life of Ellen in her pre-teen years, to see what kind of hardships she was going through and what life was like for her, her mother and her siblings.

The Nobility of Demeter Szük in 1690

Yesterday, I was able to obtain a written transcription from the 1730's of the 1690 patent of nobility that was issued to my 8th-great-grandfather, Demeter Szük. He was granted the nobility on 09 Jun 1690 by King Lipót I of Hungary, and was later recorded in Nagy-Ida, Abaúj county, Hungary on 11 Jan 1691. The four following images are copies of the transcription written in the 1730's. It has some great information on it! :)

Some information regarding their nobility:


*A document dated 05 July 1775 from the Szabolcs county nobility investigation papers, lists a nobleman named "Michaël Tóth" living in Tiszadob. It mentions that his family received nobility from King Rudolf I and that the nobility as well as a genealogy was recorded in Szolnok county. No date of when the nobility was received was given.

*In the publication, "Magyarország vármegyéi és városai", by Sámuel Borovszky, it states the following:
Tóth family, entry 4. Nobility received from King Rudolf. Recorded in Külsõ-Szolnok county. Tóth Mihály a resident of Tiszadob in 1725.


*In the publication, "Turul 1883-1950", by the Hungarian Heraldry and Genealogy Society, it states in the 1895-3 issue the following:
The brothers "Tóth Imre, Benedek, Jakab és Ambrus" received nobility from Rudolf in 1580. It was recorded in Lelesz, by Tóth István, son of Mihály and Tóth Mihály, son of István.


*In the publication, "Siebmacher's Wappenbuch", it gives a full detailed description (in German) of the coat of arms of the Tóth family. It also states that the family received nobility from King Rudolf, in Prague, on 26 Feb 1580. It was later recorded in 1583 in Eger, Heves county. It was issued to the brothers "Emerich, Benedikt, Jacob u. Ambrosius Tóth".

Miklós Horthy: An Admiral & Regent of Hungary

Miklós Horthy was born into a family of mixed religions and backgrounds. His paternal family were middle-class to upper nobility and were of the Calvanist (Reformed) religion.  His maternal side was half middle-class and upper nobility, as well as German. I did some research in Miklós' family tree, and these are my results.

Miklós was born on 18 Jun 1868 and baptized on 10 Jul 1868, in Kenderes, Jász-Nagy-Kun-Szolnok, Hungary. He was the son of István Horthy de Nagy-Bánya and Paula Halasy de Dévaványa. Make note in his baptismal record of this parent's religions; his father is listed as Reformed and his mother as Roman Catholic.

Research into István's family yields that he was born on 13 Feb 1830 and baptized on 17 Feb 1830, in Ramocsaháza, Szabolcs, Hungary, to István Horthy de Nagy-Bánya and Amália Puky de Bizák. Make note of his well-off godparents: Baron Pál Bánffy de Losoncz and his wife, Amália Borbély de Tiszaroff.

A marriage record for István and Amália provides a tiny bit more information; Amália was a resident of Tiszaroff. They were married on 31 May 1827 in Ramocsaháza, Szabolcs, Hungary.


Although Amália was living in Tiszaroff at the time of her marriage, she was born in a different town: Pánd,​ Pest-​Pilis-​Solt-​Kis-​Kun,​ Hungary. She was baptized on 26 Jul 1805 and was the daughter of Simon Puky de Bizák and his wife, Borbála Borbély de Tiszaroff. Her residence in Tiszaroff makes sense now, as her mother's family owned land in the town.

Going back into Ramocsaháza, you can find the baptism of István, Amália Puky's husband. He was baptized on 02 Dec 1795 and was the son of László Horthy de Nagy-Bánya.

Starting from the beginning, I went back to Miklós Horthy's mother, Paula Halasy. She was baptized on 18 Mar 1838 in Kenderes, Jász-Nagy-Kun-Szolnok, Hungary. Her full name listed on her baptismal record is listed as "Paulina Alexandrina Katalin Josepha". She is the daughter of József Halasy de Dévaványa and his wife Erzsébet Gerber. The godparents to her baptism were Ferencz Gerzon and his wife, Baroness Katalin Vay de Vaja.

Research into further books and nobility resources yielded more information, which you can find detailed in the pedigree chart above. Any information concerning Erzsébet Gerber's parents would be greatly appreciated.

The Hajdu-Pethe Marriage

Back about 5 years ago, I discovered a newspaper article from the late 1910's that stated an Emma Gombash was divorcing an Alex Gombash. This Alex Gombash was my great-grandfather. Not many in my family knew about a first wife, but those who did knew nothing about children from this marriage. They had a daughter, who died in infancy, and a son who I later found out lived to be 79 years old. My grandfather had an older brother!


This marriage record is for the parents of Emma Gombash, who was born Irma Hajdu on 21 Oct 1899 in Büdszentmihály, Szabolcs county, Hungary. Ironically, the Hajdu family and my own Gombash family were from the same town in Hungary. And even more, they immigrated together on the same ship and were listed next to one another on the passenger manifest. Quite an astonishing find, when I finally realized who this family was! Irma Hajdu's parents are András Hajdu and Zsófia Pethe, and this is the extract of their marriage:

FamilySearch Find of the Day: My Long-Lost Aunt

A few weeks ago, I was doing some indexing and arbitrating for the Hungarian civil registration records on FamilySearch Indexing. To my surprise, it was my great-grandfather's town of Büdszentmihály, in Szabolcs county! Within the first few batches, I came upon a birth record for a Gombás child. I immediately saw the father's name was Gombás Sándor (the name of my 2nd-great-grandfather), but kind of pushed it off the burner thinking I had all the children for my 2nd-great-grandparents. But then I saw the house number Sándor was living in; it was the house number MY Sándor had grew up and lived in! I went down and looked at the mother's name, and there she was.. my 2nd-great-grandmother, Tóth Eszter. I was blown away that I had found a sibling to my great-grandfather that I hadn't known about. I stopped indexing and analyzed the whole record, extracted the information and went and saved the actual image off FamilySearch. To my delight, the record gave mention of the child's date of death and the record number! The two records below are the child's birth record and death record, respectively.

The Hungarian-Jewish Family Tree of Zsa Zsa Gabor

Lately, on my down time from work and helping out family, I've been doing some sleuthing into Zsa Zsa Gabor's family a bit more. Back in February, I had stumbled upon Zsa Zsa's maternal aunt's marriage record. Her name was Rozália Tilleman and she was married to a man named Manó Rein. You can find that previous entry here. Well I've done a bit more digging, and I've found a lot more information to add to Zsa Zsa Gabor's family tree!

There has been much dispute about Zsa Zsa Gabor's mother's correct birthdate. Well, I have found Jolie Gabor's birth record! Zsa Zsa Gabor's mother was born as Janka Tilleman, on 30 September 1896, in Budapest District VII; the birth was registered on 02 October 1896. Her father was listed as "Tilleman Jona Hersch" (surnames were written first in Hungary). He was a sugar salesman by trade and born abt 1865 in Drohobycz, Galicia. Her mother was listed as "Reinharz Chawe Faige". She was born about 1872 in Boleczhow, Galicia. They were both of the Jewish faith and resided at Király utcza (street) 21, Budapest District VII. I'm not really sure where Jolie Gabor came up with the name "Jancsi", claiming her father wanted a boy. Janka is the Hungarian version of the feminine name Johanna.

Two years later, I found the birth record for Janka's sister, Rozália Tilleman; Zsa Zsa's aunt that I had found the marriage record for, earlier this year. She was born on 05 October 1898 in Budapest District VII; the birth being registered on 07 October 1898. Her father was listed as "Tilleman Jóna Hersch". He was a café manager by trade and born about 1865 in Drohobycz, Galicia. Her mother was listed as "Reinharcz Chawe Feige"; born about 1872 in Bolechow, Galicia. They were both Jewish and resided at Király utcza (street) 17, Budapest District VII.

Knowing that Jona Tilleman was deceased prior to his daughter Rozália's marriage in 1923, I went in search of a marriage record for Chawe Feige Reinharz.. and I found one! She was remarried on 27 November 1928 in Budapest District VI, to a doctor named "Kende Miksa" (remember, surnames first!) He was a widower of the Jewish faith who was born on 05 December 1864 in Klenócz, Czechoslovakia (previously Klenócz, Gömör county, Hungary; today Klenovec, Slovakia). He was the son of the deceased "Kohn Mór Lipót" and the deceased "Klein Resi". He was also a resident of Pannonia utcza 8/a, Budapest District V. The bride, "Reinharz Chave Feige", was listed as divorced (had she divorced Jona Tilleman prior to his death?) and born on 28 November 1873 in Bolchow, Poland; she was a resident of Rákóczi utcza 54, Budapest District VII. She was the daughter of the deceased "Reinharz Eisig" and the deceased "Stein Dwora". Witnesses to the marriage were "Hacker Bertalan", residing at Budapest District VI, Munkácsy utcza 3, and "Dr. Grosz Menyhért", residing at Budapest District V, Pannonia utcza 8/a (same residence of the groom).

With all the information gathered together, I have been able to research back to Zsa Zsa Gabor's maternal great-grandparents. Above, you can find a basic family tree to help explain the family relationships.

It states that Dr. György Sándor Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa was born on 16 Mar 1896, in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary. He was the son of György Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa and Róza Juhász. The bride was Katalin Ilona Anna Tamás Tóth de Csáford. She was born on 13 Jan 1902 in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary and was the daughter of Imre Tóth de Csáford and Adél Jeney de Boros-Jenő.

Hungarian Dictionary Review

A few years ago I purchased two Hungarian dictionaries on Amazon. I purchased an English-Hungarian dictionary as well as a Hungarian-English dictionary, both published by the same author, Z. Kiss.


I bought these a few years ago and I have recommended them to a few fellow Hungarian genealogists since. These dictionaries are fabulous! Both are just under 800 pages and they are about 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches..
perfect for traveling! I have used these dictionaries during all my research since purchasing them, and they have yet to let me down.

I know the price of $21.00 is a bit steep for a simple dictionary, but this book is definitely worth it. I'm very happy I purchased them and I would recommend them to anyone needing an English-Hungarian or Hungarian-English dictionary.

János Cserpák, Part 2

Three months ago, I found a headstone for a fellow Hungarian. His name was János Cserpák, and I explained my find in this entry here. I've been able to find more information on this young man, and his family. I hope that one of his very distant nieces or nephews finds these blog entries one day and finds them useful. :)

As I already know from János's headstone and immigration manifest, he was born on 22 Jul 1903 in Vencsellő. I do know that he was the son of Jakab and Mária Cserpák. Well, thankfully for FamilySearch and their wonderful uploading of digitized records, I was able to find his birth record! FamilySearch has a database for Hungarian civil registration records for various counties. I love these records! I just wish they had them available for my towns of Tiszadob and Büdszentmihály/Tiszavasvári. But anyway, back to my story!

I was able to find János's birth record and here is the wonderful information I was able to find out:


János was born on 22 Jul 1903 at 284 Kápolna street in Vencsellő, to parents Jakab Cserpák and Mária Türk. His parents are both listed as being born and residing in Vencsellő, and both of the Roman Catholic faith. His father's occupation is listed as "igás kocsis" which translates out to be draft-carter or draft-teamster. Not sure what kind of occupation is. Any ideas? It lists his father is 24 years old and his mother is 22 years old.

Well noting that both parents, Jakab and Mária, were born in Vencsellő, I figured their marriage record would be here too. And I was right!


They were married on 12 Jan 1902 in Vencsellő, and this document lists their parents names, birth dates and places.

Jakab Cserpák was born on 22 Dec 1878 in Vencsellő. His parents are the late János Cserpák, a day laborer and Mária Bereznai, both were residents of Vencsellő. Mária Türk was born on 28 Jan 1882 in Vencsellő. Her parents are the late Ignácz Türk, a day laborer as well, and Anna Héri, both were also residents of Vencsellő.

Noticing the Héri surname, I can make the assumption that the "Jacob Iheri" living with the Jakab and Mária Cserpák family in Chicago, in the 1920 census.. is a relative to Mária somehow.

Interestingly enough, I have a friend who's trying to research his surname of Bereznai, the same surname as Jakab Cserpák's mother. I may have found a new lead for him!

The Gombash's Very Distant Spanish Ancestry

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you know very well that my family, the Gombash's, are of Hungarian descent. Through-out my research I find new documents and records that shed light on the diversity of my Hungarian heritage. Through our Hungarian ancestry we're also Slavic, Swedish and Transylvanian. Now with some new research on our noble origins, I'm discovering that we're very distantly Spanish.

Through Eszter Tóth, we descend from the old and now extinct Nagy-Martoni family. The Nagy-Martoni began in Hungary with three brothers Bertram, Simon, Michael and their sister Tota. In 1198, the four siblings left their home of Aragón in Spain to accompany Constance, who was bethrothed to King Imre of Hungary. Much was recorded about the Nagy-Martoni family as several members of the family became quite powerful and well-to-do.

I was able to find an English source that wrote about the family: [At the court there were people who understood Provençal, because Constance had brought some families from Iberia with her. The most famous were the three brothers, Bertram, Simon and Michael, who freed Mallorca and Minorca from the Saracens, and had to leave Southern Spain because of the Almohadian invasions. They fought against the heathen in Hungary too. In 1241 "Simon Hispanus" and Bertram played a decisive role in the successful defence of the Hungarian capital city of Esztergom against the Tartars. In 1204 the Hungarian King gave a village to the sister of the three knights, a "beautiful" Tota and the Spanish family received its Hungarian name from that village. Later they were known as the counts Nagy-Martoni/or the Fraknói or the Bajóti family.] (1).

There was another additional English source that described in more detail the sister Tota: [Constance brought with her a girl called Tota, the sister of Count Simon and Count Bertram. She was exceedingly beautiful, so fair, indeed, that scarcely any woman in the world in those days was considered her like. This girl was given in marriage to Duke Benedict, son of Conrad, and her dowry was the town of Martinsdorf, a gift from King Emeric and Queen Constance.] (2).

Interestingly enough, I descend from King Imre's sister Margit through my mother's family.

Hungarian Marriage Project Update: 09 Jun 2010

I had taken a 2 1/2 month break from extracting marriage records, but I'm back at it again. Today I have added the Roman Catholic parish of Ibrány from Szabolcs county. This addition to the database adds 520 marriages from 1801 to 1894. This brings the Hungarian Marriage Project well over 12,600 marriages! You can search the Hungarian Marriage Project here:
