FamilySearch Find Of The Day: Bohemian 1717 Reichenbach-Möltzer Marriage

I've been doing more and more research into my Bohemian lines lately (they're ethnic Germans), and I'm finding more and more information. Thanks to FamilySearch initially for adding these records online, however I'm finding that the actual Litoměřice archives has digitized their collections and put them online themselves. Which I am extremely grateful for, because FamilySearch's collections seem to be missing a few register books here and there. You can also search for an exact town/community within the Litoměřice archives records, whereas you can only browse via FamilySearch. Both have their pros and cons, but I'm finding I prefer the Litoměřice archives much better. Faster loading images, also. Here is the record I found today:

Entry Number 2
Married on 31 January 1717; bachelor Johann Michäel Reichenbach of Waltersdorf and
virgin Elisabeth, deceased Christoph Möltzer gardener (farmer) in Waltersdorf' daughter.
Witness: Georg Wiesner, cottar in Nieder Politz and Christoph Hahnel, farmer in Waltersdorf.

I'll be heading to the National Archives sometime next week, after the holidays are over, to retrieve copies of her naturalization papers. FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1790 Marriage Record of James Rodgers & Ely Hays

This is the marriage of my 5th-great-grandparents, on my maternal side. I had known about this marriage in Greene County, Tennessee, not long after starting my genealogy research, but it was up until today that I had never actually seen the document. I knew the bondsmen to the marriage usually gave their seal, but I was surprised to see what looks like the signatures of James Rodgers and Samuel Hays! Here is an extract of the document:

Know all Men by these presents that we James Rodgers & Samuel Hays .... ?? are bound to his excellency William Blount, Esq. and to his successors in office in the sum of five hundred pounds to be void on condition if there be no just cause or lawful impediment to obstruct the Marriage of James Rodgers & Ely Hays...Given under our hands and seal the 20th Day of December 1790

My Christmas Genealogy Wish-List

Dear Santa & his Elves at FamilySearch,

I've been a good boy this year, giving aid to researchers left-and-right; from strangers to fellow geneabloggers. I know this to only be a wish-list, but please consider my list and hopefully some will come true and appear on your website, in the year-to-come! For each request, I will describe one good genealogy deed I have done in the past year. I will only request three specific things... because i'm not greedy, of course! :-p

1. Hungarian Church Records
I have helped countless fellow Hungarians who contacted me by email, find out more about their Hungarian heritage. I helped them to determine where in Hungary their family was from and the next proper steps to successful research.

2. German Church Records
I had stumbled upon a blog post by fellow geneablogger, Randy Seaver, and was able to quickly find out information to aid him in his search. He even made a post about it here, and a subsequent post here.

3. Polish Church Records for Barycz and Osobnica; even on microfilm!
I helped a member of the Society of Genealogists (SOG) based in the UK, to create a course on Eastern European research. The course will begin in January.

The Family Tree of French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy is the son of a Hungarian father and a French and Greek mother. His father was born a Hungarian nobleman, named Pál István Ernő Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa (in Hungarian: nagybócsai Sárközy). This post will highlight on the information I was able to find on Nicolas Sárközy's family tree, beginning with his father Pál.

The marriage record of György Sándor Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa and wife Katalin Ilona Anna Tóth de Csáford. They were married on 20 Sep 1921, in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary. It states that Dr. György Sándor Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa was born on 16 Mar 1896, in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary. He was the son of György Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa and Róza Juhász. The bride was Katalin Ilona Anna Tamás Tóth de Csáford. She was born on 13 Jan 1902 in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary and was the daughter of Imre Tóth de Csáford and Adél Jeney de Boros-Jenő.

My Wish List For FamilySearch

With the massive undertaking of the digitization project by FamilySearch, researchers have been able to conduct more and more research at home with less need for the "big-box" genealogy websites, such as Ancestry.com. It was only back in March of last year that FamilySearch really began adding substantial amounts of new databases to their new website.. and a lot of them having indexes, as well.

FamilySearch has been adding new databases almost daily, and I'm constantly checking back (almost daily!) to see what new databases they have uploaded. I thought it would be fun to create a post containing my wish list of what records I would like to appear on FamilySearch. I know in due time that (most of) these records will appear online, whether it be days, months or even years from now.. but it's still fun to talk and think about.

Doing this wish list Genie style (you only get three wishes!), here is my wish list of records I'm hoping for on FamilySearch!

*1. Hungarian Church records
FamilySearch has done an amazing job with uploading two seperate databases for Slovakian Church records (areas that had previous belonged to Hungary, prior to the Treaty of Trianon). I was told by FamilySearch that they eventually plan on combining these two databases after they fix a few bugs. Although I haven't been able to find anything for my direct line in these records, I have actually found information pertaining to distant cousins.

*2. Polish Church records
Looking at my family tree, I'm mostly Polish. My father being 3/4 Polish! I have high hopes for this database, very very high hopes. They're high hopes, because nearly half of the areas that my Polish ancestors came from, do not have church records preserved on microfilm. I doubt these records will be preserved on microfilm or digitized and put online at FamilySearch.. but I can hope! The priests at these towns are very notorious for being extremely uncooperative with researchers. Even researchers who come in person.

*3. Land Deeds
It would be fantastic for the land deeds we all need for research, to become available online in one location. These records are what we use to track down where our family lived and moved to. They're essential to our research!

What kind of databases or specific records are on your Wish List for FamilySearch? And remember.. only three! Make sure to leave a comment on this post with a link to yours, I'd love to see what your Wish List contains!

Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers Quarterback and His Connection to the Chicago Bears & Pittsburgh Steelers

While watching the big playoff game today, I became interested in the Green Bay Packer's quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. He shares the same surname with my mother's family.. and it's spelled the same way with the "D" too! I come across Rogers often, but not Rodgers. So, I became intrigued and wanted to know more about Aaron Rodgers' family tree.

A simple Google search brings up his name is Aaron Charles Rodgers and was born 02 Dec 1983 in Chico, Butte County, California. Knowing that Ancestry.com has database for birth, marriage and death records for California, I immediately head over there to do some simple searches.

I navigate to the database "California Birth Index, 1905-1995" and I find him with his full name and birthdate and the database also contains his mother's maiden name, Pittman. I then go to the sister database "California Marriage Index, 1960-1985" and search for a marriage between a groom Rodgers and bride Pittman. Bingo! His parent's names are Edward W. Rodgers (born about 1955) and Darla L. Pittman (born about 1958). They were married on 05 Apr 1980 in Mendocino County, California.

Going back to my trusted friend, Google, I search for Edward W. Rodgers in Chico, California. Up pops a bagillion results for a Chiropractor named Edward W. Rodgers, (JR!) in Chico, California. We now know he's a Junior! I also take note that he comes up as Edward Wesley Rodgers, Jr. I immediately go back to Ancestry.com and do an Advanced Search for an Edward Rodgers in Chico. I find what I believe to be Aaron's grandfather in the "Social Security Death Index" and also "U.S. Phone and Address Directories, 1993-2002". Both name him as Edward W. Rodgers with the same birth date of 07 Nov 1917 and either living or died in Chico, Butte County, California. Noticing on the "Social Security Death Index" that he passed away in 1996, he should appear in the Ancestry.com database "California Death Index, 1940-1997". He shows up stating that he was born in Illinois and his mother's maiden name was Larrick.

This is when the fun really starts! I head over to the new FamilySearch.org and do an Advanced Search for Parent's surnames of Rodgers and Larrick. I find three definite results. The first two are a birth certificate for a Louis Alexander Rodgers and also a death certificate for him. The third result is what I'm looking for.. a birth certificate for Edward Wesley Rodgers, born 07 Nov 1917... in CHICAGO! As in the Chicago Bears?! So these documents state that the parents names are (with variations like abbreviations) Alexander John Rodgers and Cora Larrick. The birth certificates state that Alexander John was born in Pennsylvania and that Cora was born in Illinois.

I was then able to locate the family in the 1920 census, although they weren't living in Chicago anymore. They were living in Rock Island Township, Rock Island County, Illinois. It's definitely the right family, as you'll be able to see from the names and places of birth in the household.

According to the birth certificates of Alexander John's two children, he was born about 1892 or 1893.. prime age for the WWI draft! I find his WWI Draft Registration Card with him having registered in Jun 1917 in Chicago. It states that he was married, although unfortunately it doesn't state the wife's name. His place of birth more than makes up for the fact of a lack of his wife's name. It states he was born on 25/28 (hard to make out) Jan 1893 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.. as in the Pittsburgh Steelers! I sure wish these dang WWI Draft Registration Cards were much more clearer and easier to read. I've never seen a single clear image. Anyway..

Well considering we know his birth date and place of birth, we should look for him in the 1900 census in Pittsburgh.. and he's easily found.. maybe too easily. He is listed as Alexander J. Rodgers, born Jan 1893. He is with his widowed mother, Louisa Rodgers, born Mar 1870 in Germany. They're both living in the household of Louisa's parents (Alexander's grandparents), William and Sophia C. Houseberg.. natives of Germany. Them being from Germany leads me to believe their surname would've been Haasberg or something similar back in the old country. Haas is the German word for House.. they wouldn't have used "House" in Germany. The family is living at 646 Herron Ave, in Pittsburgh.

At this point, I'm now stuck in a rut. I'm not aware of any resources online for Pittsburgh vital records or even a state census for 1895 (does it even exist?). I then remember this awesome website that has tons of old Pittsburgh city directories digitized online, so I head over to DonsList.net to see what they have available. I find a directory for Pittsburgh 1900, so I decide to take a look.. considering I know Louisa Rodgers (widowed) was living with her parents are 646 Herron Ave. I'm surprised to locate Louisa and she's living at 648 Herron Ave.. and she's listed as the widow of Archibald! What are the odds?

As for Archibald, I did find one result in the Pittsburgh 1880 census for an Archibald that would be roughly 2 years older than Louisa; but I can't be positive it's him, I would need more proof. This Archibald is the son of Alexander (Archibald's only child's name!) and Mary Ann Rodgers, both born about 1837 in Ireland. Interestingly enough, Alexander's occupation is listed as a "puddler", which according to Wikipedia (horrible source, I know...), "puddling was an improved process to convert pig iron into wrought iron with the use of a reverberating furnace"

We now have Aaron Rodgers' connection to the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers! Now I wonder if he has a connection to New York (New York Jets!).. other than immigrations, of course.

János Cserpák, Part 2

Three months ago, I found a headstone for a fellow Hungarian. His name was János Cserpák, and I explained my find in this entry here. I've been able to find more information on this young man, and his family. I hope that one of his very distant nieces or nephews finds these blog entries one day and finds them useful. :)

As I already know from János's headstone and immigration manifest, he was born on 22 Jul 1903 in Vencsellő. I do know that he was the son of Jakab and Mária Cserpák. Well, thankfully for FamilySearch and their wonderful uploading of digitized records, I was able to find his birth record! FamilySearch has a database for Hungarian civil registration records for various counties. I love these records! I just wish they had them available for my towns of Tiszadob and Büdszentmihály/Tiszavasvári. But anyway, back to my story!

I was able to find János's birth record and here is the wonderful information I was able to find out:

János was born on 22 Jul 1903 at 284 Kápolna street in Vencsellő, to parents Jakab Cserpák and Mária Türk. His parents are both listed as being born and residing in Vencsellő, and both of the Roman Catholic faith. His father's occupation is listed as "igás kocsis" which translates out to be draft-carter or draft-teamster. Not sure what kind of occupation is. Any ideas? It lists his father is 24 years old and his mother is 22 years old.

Well noting that both parents, Jakab and Mária, were born in Vencsellő, I figured their marriage record would be here too. And I was right!

They were married on 12 Jan 1902 in Vencsellő, and this document lists their parents names, birth dates and places.

Jakab Cserpák was born on 22 Dec 1878 in Vencsellő. His parents are the late János Cserpák, a day laborer and Mária Bereznai, both were residents of Vencsellő. Mária Türk was born on 28 Jan 1882 in Vencsellő. Her parents are the late Ignácz Türk, a day laborer as well, and Anna Héri, both were also residents of Vencsellő.

Noticing the Héri surname, I can make the assumption that the "Jacob Iheri" living with the Jakab and Mária Cserpák family in Chicago, in the 1920 census.. is a relative to Mária somehow.

Interestingly enough, I have a friend who's trying to research his surname of Bereznai, the same surname as Jakab Cserpák's mother. I may have found a new lead for him!

Tombstone Tuesday - János Cserpák

I was at the Mount Olivet Catholic cemetery yesterday, which is on the south side of Chicago. I was originally looking for my half-uncle's great-grandmother, Anna Felton nee Vearon or Vieron. I found her lot easily enough and she unfortunately didn't have headstone or marker. Neither did the random three other people completely unrelated to her, that were around her. Quite sad.

While walking back to my car I stumbled upon a headstone of a fellow Hungarian: János Cserpák. His headstone stated he was born on 22 Jul 1903 and he died on 20 Mar 1922 at the age of 18 years old. I snapped two pictures of his headstone; one of the headstone and one of the picture on the top. You can see them below:

During the car ride home I got to wondering what he could have died from so young. I got home and went onto FamilySearch's Record Search and searched for him in the Cook County, Illinois Deaths, 1878-1922. I found his death certificate listed under John Cherpak. In Hungarian, "CS" is pronounced "CH" as in 'chug'. The Americanized spelling of his name makes perfect sense.

John died at his home, 916 East 92nd Place in Chicago, on 20 Mar 1922. He was buried two days later in Mount Olivet cemetery on 22 Mar 1922. The cause of death is listed as "Lobar pneumonia" for the duration of 4 days and the secondary contributor was "cardiac failure". It's sad to think that something as common as pneumonia is so easily cured with today's medicine. He was listed as 18 years old and was a machinist at the "Nickle Plate R.R." His parents are listed as Jacob Cherpak and Mary Turk. John and his parents were listed as being born in "Austria". His father was the informant for the death certificate.

I found the Cherpak family in the 1920 census living at 916 East 92nd Place in Chicago, Illinois:
Cherpak, Jacob, Head, 52, married, immigrated 1911, alien, Hungary
Cherpak, Mary, Wife, 41, married, immigrated 1913, alien, Hungary
Cherpak, John, Son, 16, single, immigrated 1913, alien, Hungary
Cherpak, Anna, Daughter, 14, single, immigreated 1913, alien, Hungary
Iheri, Jacob, Boarder, 48, married, immigrated 1912, alien, Hungary

Jacob was a carpenter for the railroad shop and John (2 years before his death) was an apprentice at the railroad shop. Looking at the whole census page, every single family was Hungarian.. it must've been a predominantly Hungarian area that they lived in.

I was then able to locate John with his mother and sister in the Ellis Island passenger manifests. They were listed as Cserpak Mária (30), Cserpak János (9) and Cserpak Anna (7). They were of both Hungarian nationality and race. Their last residence, which happened to also be their place of birth, is a town called Vencsellő. They were residing with Mária's mother Anna Turk. (John's death record stated his mother's maiden name was Turk!) They were traveling to their husband and father Cserpak Jakab in Chicago. Vencsellő was in Szabolcs county of Hungary and was actually not too far from where my family came from. Vencsellő is roughly an hour North-East of Tiszadob and Büdszentmihály (now Tiszvasvári). Today, Vencsellő is combined with the town of Gáva and called Gávavencsellő (how original, huh?).

I've actually been researching in the Reformed church records of Gáva with my friend Sharon for her noble Bakó family, for the past few weeks. What are the odds? :)

A Few Hungarian Resources

There's a great Hungarian resource I need to share with everyone. János Bogárdi has created some amazing gazetteers for the Austria-Hungary empire. He has one for 1877 and now he's created one for the early 1900's. Here are the links:

The 1877 gazetteer is a very important resource to me, I use it for all my Hungarian research. János has it organized by counties (megye), and then sorted alphabetically by district and then place name. He then gives the church parishes in which the town residents would've belonged. And the best part.. he links directly to the Family History Library Catalog, if microfilms are available for the parish.

The 1900 gazetteer is new, but looks promising as well. With this project coming from János, it'll no doubt end up just as great as the 1877 gazetteer.
