FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1908 Marriage of József Majoros & Anna Tóth in Ó-Fehértó

While doing some work on my Gombash line today, I was looking at the spouses of my great-grandfather's siblings; one of them being Michael Mayors. I know he was married to my great-grandfather's sister, Julia, on 09 Sep 1939 in Guernsey county, Ohio. Thanks to their marriage record, I knew Michael's exact birth date and the name of his parents: 18 Jun 1912 and Joseph Mayors (Majoros) & Anna Toth. Using that information, I tracked down their passenger manifest records via Ellis Island and located where they originally came from in Hungary: Ó-Fehértó, Szabolcs, Hungary. Below is the marriage record for Michael's parents:

The Baksa Genus - Baksa Nemzetség

The Baksa genus (also sometimes written as Boksa, Boxa and Baxa), is a Hungarian clan dating itself back to the era of the Árpád dynasty. The Baksa genus held large amounts of land possessions primarily in Heves, Szabolcs and Zemplén counties. Their largest possesions were Bodrog-Szerdahely, Dorogháza, Gyüre, Homoki, Kövesd, Lagmócz, Nagy-Halász, Szöllőske and Zemplén.

It wasn't until the 13th century that the Baksa genus reached significant political roles in Hungary. Important figures of the Baksa genus at that time were the Ispán named György and also Tamás and László. György was a general in the Hungarian army during the Battle on the Marchfield allied with Habsburgs, which involved the Holy Roman Empire, Austrian lands and the Kingdom of Hungary. The opponent of the Habsburgs and Hungarians of the battle were the Bohemian army led by King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Oddly enough, King Ottokar II's paternal grandmother was of the Árpád family.. the ruling dynasty of Hungary.

Tamás and László fought along-side king Károly I of Hungary against the rising oligarchs after the end of the Árpád dynasty. They then participated in King Lajos I of Hungary's Italian wars, for his claim on the throne of Naples.

There are numerous branches of the Baksa genus that took on their own independent names and are still thriving today. The known Hungarian families that can trace their origins to the Baksa genus are the following:

Agóczy de Agócz (agóczi Agóczy)
Bacskay de Bacska (bacskai Bacskay)
Bocskay de Bocskó és Kis-Maria (bocskói és kis-mariai Bocskay)
Csapy de Csap (csapi Csapy)
Eszenyi de Eszeny (eszenyi Eszeny)
Gálszéchy de Gálszéch (gálszéchi Gálszéchy)
Kellemessy
Kendy de Kende (kendei Kendy)
Kövesdy de Kövesd (kövesdi Kövesdy)
Pósváraljai de Pósváralja (pósváraljai Pósváraljai)
Soós de Sóvár (sóvári Soós)
Széchy de Gálszéch (gálszéchi Széchy)
Szerdahelyi de Szerdahely (szerdahelyi Szerdahelyi)
Szürtey de Szürte (szürtei Szürtey)
Zrittey de Zritte (zrittei Zrittey)

Treasure Chest Thursday - Newly-Found Noble Family!

On Tuesday night, I discovered a new noble branch for my family tree. This branch comes through the Gombás family.. not the Tóth's from Tiszadob. They were the Szabó family, who also had an alias: Soltész or Solticz. They were a family from Tiszalök in Szabolcs megye. In the 1725-1726 nobility investigation, I find a "Szabó aliter Solvicz Stephan" in Tiszalök. Solvicz is obviously a misspelling. He stated his family received their nobility on 22 Oct 1714 in Pozsony by King Károly III, and that it was recorded on 06 Jul 1715 in Eszlár, Szabolcs megye.

The family is listed in Béla Kempelen's work "Magyar nemes családok": Szabó (másképen Solticz) cimereslevelet 1714. okt. 22. siebm. 611.

I then found in Siebmacher's Wappenbuch on page 611, a coat of arms that was listed for a György and Krisztián Szabó in 1714.

New Website!!!

I've finally moved my website from rootsweb onto a server hosted by my friend Cathy Napolitan, and i'm able to use the Gombash domain name. (THANK YOU, CATHY!!) From now on, please use:

I've been thinking and i've done quite a bit in the past few months already. I've created indexes to several more of the Naturalization records for Langlade County (which you can find here: http://www.gombash.com/rodgers/langlade/)

I've also created two indexes related to Hungarian nobility research. They are the Hungarian Nobility Investigations 1725-1726 for Szabolcs megye (county) and Zemplén megye (county). It's a listing of all the nobles living in specific towns through-out then entire counties. You can find them here: http://www.gombash.com/gombash/hungary.html

I've also been doing research in the Catholic parish records for Kravare in Bohemia. RecordSearch recently updated the database and the records for this town are now available. Kravare.. which was called Graber before all the World Wars happened, was the birthplace of 2nd-great-grandmother Anna Weishaupt. I've come across some pretty interesting and different surnames I've never seen before: Grundmann, Heller, Kasper, Matzken, Paschant, Reichenbach, Sandrich, Schicketantz, Schneller, Seeman, Tietze/Tieze, Vogel, Weishaupt, Wenzel. If you're researching any of these names from the Bohemia area, PLEASE contact me! They include the towns Graber, Bleiswedel, Johnsdorf, Schönau, Schönborn and Sterndorf. They are in the county of Leitmeritz in Northern Bohemia, roughly 40 miles North of Prague.
