FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1790 Marriage Record of James Rodgers & Ely Hays

This is the marriage of my 5th-great-grandparents, on my maternal side. I had known about this marriage in Greene County, Tennessee, not long after starting my genealogy research, but it was up until today that I had never actually seen the document. I knew the bondsmen to the marriage usually gave their seal, but I was surprised to see what looks like the signatures of James Rodgers and Samuel Hays! Here is an extract of the document:

Know all Men by these presents that we James Rodgers & Samuel Hays .... ?? are bound to his excellency William Blount, Esq. and to his successors in office in the sum of five hundred pounds to be void on condition if there be no just cause or lawful impediment to obstruct the Marriage of James Rodgers & Ely Hays...Given under our hands and seal the 20th Day of December 1790

Signed, sealed, and acknowledged before D. Kennedy, County Clerk

   James Rodgers, seal
   Samuel Hays, seal

Surname Saturday #21: Chatham/Cheatham

I've been interested in this line for a long time now, primarily because of all the unique names within the family. I haven't had much luck on researching this family, but with such unusual middle names I'm to believe that they had to have been family surnames somewhere down the line.            m. Hezekiah Davis, 09 Jun 1818, Putnam County, Georgia

According to an acquaintance I have (a possible cousin?), George H. Cheatham may have had a brother named William Cheatham, who in turn had a son named Thomas R. Cheatham, who was "adopted 11 days after his birth by Veazey Ferrill". Apparently there exists a will that mentions George and William, but I have yet to receive any copies or find any that match it for myself.

Surname Saturday #4: Stuempges

Have you ever seen a family use the mother's surname, instead of the father's? My maternal grandmother, Elaine Stuempges, is the grandparent I know the most about. I've been fortunate enough to have been (and continue to be) told stories from my mom and aunt about my grandma, that I cherish every day. I really should write down everything they tell me! The Stuempges are pure German, having immigrated directly to Wisconsin in the 1850's. The earlier Stümpges family must have had some kind of wealth or higher social standing within the community, because as you'll see with the earliest generations (10 and 11), the children used the MOTHER'S surname.. not the father's. This was the case for two sisters, one of which I descend from! Very very interesting! Here is what I know on my grandmother's family:

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - List Your Matrilineal Line(s)

Here are the rules, as posted on Randy Seaver's blog, for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun!!:

1) List your matrilineal line - your mother, her mother, etc. back to the first identifiable mother. Note: this line is how your mitochondrial DNA was passed to you!

2) Tell us if you have had your mitochondrial DNA tested, and if so, which Haplogroup you are in.

3) Post your responses on your own blog post, in Comments to this blog post, or in a Status line on Facebook or in your Stream at Google Plus.

4)  If you have done this before, please do your father's matrilineal line, or your grandfather's matrilineal line, or your spouse's matriliuneal line.

5)  Does this list spur you to find distant cousins that might share one of your matrilineal lines?

Here's mine:

The Love... Square... of Mary "Polly" Hovis

A few months ago, I met a not-so-distant cousin on the internet and she was able to shed some light and new information on one of our brick-wall ancestors. Her name was Ellen, and she was the second wife of William S. Martin, of Lincoln County, North Carolina. She shared with me Ellen's maiden name.. Hovis.. and that's when all the pieces gradually began to fit together.

I knew that Ellen Hovis was born sometime around 1825 and probably in Lincoln County, North Carolina. She had a previous marriage to a Robert Kenedy (Caneda) on 23 Jan 1840 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Robert must have died, because Ellen was then married to her second husband, William S. Martin (also a widower), on 01 Sep 1845 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Here are the children of Ellen Hovis Kennedy Martin:

Ellen Hovis & Robert Kenedy:

*Margaret E. Kenedy, married to William Misskelley

Ellen Hovis & William S. Martin:

*Mary C. Martin
married to a man named McDowel; divorced?

*Elmira Terissa Martin
married to James K. McDaniel

*Samuel Christopher Columbus Martin (my 2nd-great-grandfather)
married first to Mary Britnal
married second to Samantha Costilow (my 2nd-great-grandmother)
married third to Evie Evelyn Rodgers

*Saliana Martin

*John L. Martin
married to Clementine "Clemmie" McDonald

*Nancy Martin

*Ollie M. Martin

At this point, I was at a dead-end. I didn't know anything on the parents or siblings of Ellen Hovis or William S. martin. I did however know the name of the bondsman for the marriage of Ellen and William.. Jonas Lineberger. I originally found a Jonas who was the son of a Michael Lineberger and Katherine Hovis.. a definite clue and possible connection. This later led me (with the aid of another newly found cousin) to a publication called "Our kin : being a history of the Hoffman, Rhyne, Costner, Rudisill, Best, Hovis, Hoyle, Wills, Shetley, Jenkins, Holland, Hambright, Gaston, Withers, Cansler, Clemmer and Lineberger families", published in 1915 by D.E. Ryne, L.L. Jenkins and L.M. Hoffman. Yes.. a very lengthy title.

This book was my jackpot! On page 392, it stated that Ellen Hovis who married William Martin, was (one of three) illegitimate children of Polly Hovis, later married to Eli Chapple. The book actually gave a nearly-whole page account on Eli Chapple, and the author of this section clearly knew this man and this specific family well. I knew this information had to be correct! The information has Mary "Polly" Hovis as the daughter of Andrew Hovis and his wife Nancy Foster. Later searches around the internet brought up the same information, as well as Mary "Polly" and the illegitimate kids.. who erroneously bore the Chapple surname of their step-father.

I was then told about holy grail of records for illegitimate children.. Bastardy Bonds! I never knew these type of records existed back then and I was ecstatic while reading-up on them on the internet. With Mary "Polly" having THREE illegitimate kids, odds were in my favor that something had to have been recorded.. or at least I hoped so! A week or two after finding out all this exciting information, a gracious genea-friend sent me copies of an index to the Bastardy Bonds for Lincoln County, North Carolina, covering years 1784-1842. I found the exact entry I was hoping for, for my Ellen.. and I was given an extra surprise. It had her birthdate! It listed the father as "Jonas Huffman", which I knew was a mis-spelling of Hoffman, a very large family in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

I narrowed down my search for Jonas Hoffman, which was actually pretty easy, to a man born in 1788 and died (very young) in 1829. Ellen was only 5 when her father died.. I wonder if she knew he was her father at all, at that age? Anyway.. this is where the story gets good.. really good. Jonas Hoffman was a MARRIED MAN! Ten years prior to Ellen's birth (1814), Jonas Hoffman was married to Anna Maria Costner. From 1814 til his death in 1829, Jonas Hoffman and Anna Maria Costner had nine children.. and Ellen was born smack-dab in between the 5th and 6th child. How could Anna Maria Costner have continued to be with this man, fully knowing what he had done? She had to have known, because the bastardy bond was listed as a "joint bond".. both parties accepted the support of the child (Ellen). Anna Maria had to have known her husband was paying to support an illegitimate child... Right?

The story continues to unravel. In the publication I mentioned above, it stated that Mary "Polly" Hovis "lived on the old Hoffman tract of land embracing a very small piece of ground and a cabin put up for her". In the will of Jonas Hoffman's father, John Hoffman, this is verified. It appears it was HIS land, that Mary "Polly" was living on. So the whole Hoffman family must have known she had Jonas' bastard child! The will describes a portion of land that is to be divided between Jonas Hoffman's six surviving songs, because Jonas was deceased already. It's described as "the little place where Polly Hovis lives". Further research into John Hoffman, finds that his wife was a Hovis.. and the aunt of Mary "Polly". Ellen's parents were first cousins, they shared the same grandparents.

One last little clue that is pretty cool. Ellen's half-sister, Lanie Salena Hoffman, was married to a Jonas Lineberger.. the bondsman for the marriage of Ellen Hovis and William S. Martin. Something also interesting, is that Ellen and William had a daughter named "Saliana" (according to 1870 census). Could "Saliana" be a name-sake for her aunt Lanie Salena Hoffman? Ellen must have had a close relationship with her half-sister Lanie Salena Hoffman, for her husband to be a bondsman to her marriage and to name a daughter after her!

In the Bastardy Bonds index, I was able to find one more entry for a sibling to Ellen. It was in 1818 and I believe it was for her older brother, Rufus Hovis. The father is listed as "Joseph McCallister", probably McAllister.. another large family of Lincoln County, North Carolina. Mary "Polly" was later married to Eli Chapple, a "Yankee" shoemaker originally from New York. Mary "Polly" and Eli had a son names Joseph, who was later married to a McAllister woman. Was she a half-sister to Joseph's half-brother, Rufus? I found no entry for Ellen and Rufus' brother, whose name I've seen written as both Christian and Christopher.

Oh, that connections!

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - the 1940 US Census

This is going to be a fun post. I saw on a website, that the 1940 census will be open to the public as of yesterday, one year from now. Immediately, I began thinking of who I should find first.

I've already been able to find my maternal grandparents. My grandfather, Thomas Thurman Rodgers, was born in Duck Hill, Montgomery County, Mississippi on 15 Jun 1928 to Fred Lamar Rodgers and Ellen Inez Martin. Here is an excerpt of him with his family in the 1930 census:

Rodgers, Fred L., Head, 30, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi, Farmer
Rodgers, Ellen I., Wife, 27, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi, Farm laborer
Rodgers, M. J., Son, 11, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Virginia A., Daughter, 6, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Wilburn H., Son, 4 8/12, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Thomas T., Son, 16/12, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi

My maternal grandmother was Elaine Florella Stuempges. She was born 31 Dec 1926 in Polar, Langlade County, Wisconsin, to Walter John Stuempges and Sylvia Maria Martin. Here is an excerpt of her with her family in the 1930 census:

Stuempges, Walter, Head, 30, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Bohemia, Mechanic in Garage
Stuempges, Sylvia, Wife, 20, Wisconsin, Germany, Wisconsin
Stuempges, Elaine, Daughter, 3, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin
Stuempges, Eunice, Daughter, 1, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin

As for my paternal grandparents, they were born after the 1930 census. My grandfather was John Edward Gombash. He was born 02 Oct 1935 in Caretta, McDowell County, West Virginia and was the son of Alex Gombash (previously Sándor Gombás) and Catherine Grządziel. Along with my great-grandparents and my grandfather, there will be 6 other children listed.. siblings to my grandfather. They're all living, so I won't state names and dates out of respect for their privacy.

My paternal grandmother was Mary Louise Adas. She was born 02 Mar 1940 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to Edward Robert Adas, Sr. and his wife Martha Violet Czarny. Now knowing she was born in 1940, I'm REALLY hoping she's listed in the census. I'm not sure of the months of which the census was take that year, so I'll have to do some research on that topic. She had one younger brother who was born in 1941.

I'm going to be really curious about my paternal great-great-grandmother, as well. She was Eszter (Tóth) Gombás. Her husband, my great-great-grandfather, had died in May of 1931. She will have been a widow for 9 years now. I'm not sure of the exact location of where she will be, but I believe she may be in Lore City, Richland Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. That's where her daughter Julia (Gombash) Mayors was hopefully living at the time. I do know that Eszter died in April of 1950 in Lore City. Maybe she'll even appear in the 1950 census, too! Boy am I impatient! :)

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Ancestral Name List Roulette

1) How old is one of your grandfathers now, or how old would he be if he had lived? Divide this number by 4 and round the number off to a whole number. This is your "roulette number."

2) Use your pedigree charts or your family tree genealogy software program to find the person with that number in your ancestral name list (some people call it an "ahnentafel"). Who is that person?

3) Tell us three facts about that person in your ancestral name list with the "roulette number."

4) Write about it in a blog post on your own blog, in a Facebook note or comment, or as a comment on this blog post.

5) If you do not have a person's name for your "roulette number" then spin the wheel again - pick a grandmother, or yourself, a parent, a favorite aunt or cousin, or even your children!

I used my maternal grandfather for this exercise, his name is Thomas Thurman Rodgers (born in 1928). My whole number comes out (when rounded up) to 21 and my ancestor that fits that number is my 2nd-great-grandmother Josephine Domagalski.

A few years ago, I knew practically nothing about Josephine nor had ever seen a picture of her. Today, I have two.. maybe three.. pictures of her and I know much much more about her! :)

Fact 1: She is the only child (and the eldest) out of her eleven siblings to have been born in Medina, Orleans County, New York. The rest of her eleven siblings were born in Chicago.

Fact 2: According to the 1930 census, she was living with her family at 6019 S. Fairfield Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.

Fact 3: She died in the now closed and supposedly haunted Manteno State Hospital in Kankakee County, Illinois.

My Birthday - May 30th

Today is my birthday and I'm now 24! I thought it'd be neat to search my database and see who all was also born on May 30th. Here is what I found:

Acker, Mary Jane:
She was born 30 May 1864 in Pickens County, Alabama to Baylis Grace Acker and Elizabeth Frances Clardy. She was married to my 1st cousin 4 times removed Lewis Banks Rodgers, Sr., on 04 Jan 1883 in Cherokee County, Texas. They had eleven children from 1883 to 1908!

Berzeviczy de Berzevicze, Mária:
She was born on 30 May 1895 in Eperjes, Sáros megye, Hungary. Her father was Elek Berzeviczy de Berzevicze and her mother was Anna Hrabéczy de Vágujhely. Mária is a very distant cousin of mine, and to date I'm related to her three times:
*9th cousin, 3 times removed
*11th cousin, 2 times removed
*12th cousin, 2 times removed

Blum, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1786 in Sulzbach, a tiny community in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Conrad Blum and Anna Maria Lauble. Georg's paternal 3rd-great-grandparents Christian and Magdalena Blum (born in 1590's) are my 10th-great-grandparents. Georg is my 4th cousin, 7 times removed.

Bodogh, Eugene John
Eugene was born 30 May 1912 in Alpha, Warren County, New Jersey. He was born to Kálmán Bódogh and Paulina Szankó. Kálmán was born in Nemesszalók, Veszprém megye, Hungary. This line of Bódogh's were a branch of my cousins who left Miskolc in Borsod megye and resettled in Veszprém megye. The earliest members of this branch that I know of are the two brothers János and István. János was the progenitor of the Veszprém megye branch and he was a reverend. He was born about 1809 and died 05 Dec 1880 in Mihályháza, Veszprém megye, Hungary. István was a land-owner in Felsõ-Iregh, Tolna megye, Hungary. I'm not sure if he had any children or descendants. I believe the two brothers may have been born in Miskolc.

Cielewich, Edmund Edward
Edmund was born 30 May 1899 in Medina, Orleans County, New York. His parents are William P. Cielewich and Anna C. Gottovi. I also descend from the Gottovi family, and Anna is my 2nd cousin, 5 times removed.

Savoy-Carignano, King Amadeus I of Spain
He was born 30 May 1845 to King Victor Emanuele II of Italy and his wife Maria Adelaide Habsburg-Lotharingen. I'm related to King Amadeus I of Spain through countless connections, but our closest link is 15th cousins, 9 times removed through our ancestor Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland. Amadeus's wife was Maria Laetitia Bonaparte, the great-niece of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Erwin, William Armstrong
He was born 30 May 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He was the son of James William Erwin, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Rodgers. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph Rodgers and Elizabeth Donaldson. My 5th-great-grandfather James Rodgers, is the brother of Joseph.

Habsburg, Claudia Felicitas
She was born 30 May 1653 to Ferdinand Charles Habsburg and Anna Medici. She was the wife of Leopold I, King of Hungry and Holy Roman Emperor. Claudia is a prime example of the extent of inbreeding with the royalty of Europe. Her paternal grandfather is the brother of her maternal grandmother. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of her maternal grandfather. Her paternal great-grandparents are the exact same as her maternal great-grandparents. It doesn't help her case that her ancestors married into more Habsburg and Medici lines. Our closest line of connection makes us 11th cousins, 10 times removed.

Kolpack, Herman Gustav
He was born 30 May 1860 in Western Prussia, Germany. He was the son of Christoph Kolpack and Karolina Majewska. Herman Gustav is the grandfather of Milton, the husband of my grandmother's step-sister, Gloria Flemming.

Porkoláb, Erzsébet
She was born 30 May 1835 in Tiszadob, to Lajos Porkoláb and Borbála Szabados. Erzsébet is my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.

Porkoláb, László
He was born 30 May 1855 in Tiszadob, to György Porkoláb and Erzsébet Tamási. I'm related to László through both the Porkoláb and Bódogh families. His paternal grandmother is my 5th great-aunt.

Rodgers, Kenneth Orman
He was born 30 May 1919 in Montgomery County, Mississippi to Norman Lester Rodgers and Myrtle Pearl Bennett. Norman is the brother of my great-grandfather Fred Lamar Rodgers. Myrtle is my 2nd cousin, 4 times removed (twice, as her mother and father were first cousins).

Summ, Conrad

2 Year Anniversary

Tomorrow, January 12th, it'll be two years since the passing of my great-grandmother, Sylvia Flemming. I'd like to share a little information about her and include some pictures. You won't be forgotten, grandma.

She was born Sylvia Laura Hattie Martin on 28 May 1909 in Langlade County, Wisconsin. Her parents were Gustav Martin and Maria Summ. Gustav's family were from Brandenburg and Pommern, and Maria's family was from Baden. Sylvia was baptized on 13 June 1909 at St. Peter's church in Polar. Her baptismal name was Sylvia Maria Bertha Hedwig Martin.

(Elaine Stuempges & Sylvia Flemming in Chicago on the shore of Lake Michigan)

Sylvia was married to Walter John Stuempges on 21 Sep 1927 in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota. They had two daughter, Elaine (my grandmother) on 31 Dec 1926 in Polar, and Eunice on 27 Sep 1928. The marriage was an unhappy one, Walter was an abusive alcoholic. Sylvia divorced him in 1944.

(Elaine Stuempges & Sylvia Flemming at Brookfield Zoo)

Sylvia later married a widower named Ewald Ferdinand Flemming. They farmed and lived happily until his death in July of 1987, just one month after her daughter Elaine (my grandma) passed away. She was a loved and well-spoken of woman and she'll always be remembered as such. Rest In Peace, grandma.
