The information I came across seems to conclude that her distant grandmother was a twin; and she mentioned she didn't know of any twins in her family. Why You Should Re-Examine Your Documents

There are times when we find documents and we seem to miss a few specific clues. We may be excited about our new find, or rushed for time and don't fully analyze all the wording. Whatever the case, it really does pay off to look over your documents and records every now and then. I do this every-so-often and find things I happen to have over-looked. I know I'm probably not the only one out there! Here is a great example that happened to me only a few days ago.

I was reviewing a few documents I received from a cousin around April 2010, that pertained to my noble Porkoláb family from Tiszadob, Hungary. The document is called "kihallgatás", which translates literally to mean "interrogation". The document is more of a testimony than it is an interrogation. On the second page, it explains in full detail the fourth testimony for the Porkoláb family by a Mihály Rácz. With-in this testimony, Mihály Rácz talks about an aged Márton Porkoláb with the nickname "szakálas" (bearded) and an István Zákány, from another known noble family living in Tiszadob. On the last few lines it states the following in Hungarian: "az öreg szakálas Porkoláb Mártonnak - kinek felesége Zákány leány vólt". This means "the aged 'bearded' Porkoláb Márton, whose wife was the daughter of Zákány".

"Szakálas" Porkoláb Márton lived before the time of recorded church records, in Tiszadob. So other than this document that list's his wife's (partial) name, she would've been lost to history forever. She has never been mentioned in any known document that I have for the Porkoláb family.

It really does pay to look over your previously found documents!

He was the husband of Adriana Jensen (b. 1677). He is my 1st cousin 9 times removed. Our common ancestors are his paternal grandparents: Thönis am Bleeckkamp and Giertgen Stümpges. Interestingly enough, all of their children took on their mother's surname of Stümpges. Weird, huh?

My noble Tóth family of Tiszadob, Hungary

My Tóth family's nobility is old, and the family is very distinct. They were given their nobility in 1580 by King Rudolf I of Hungary, also Holy Roman Emperor and was from the house of Habsburg. It was granted to four (4) brothers: Imre (Emerich), Benedek (Benedict), Jakab (Jacob) and Ambrúzs (Ambrose). You can see my previous blog entry HERE containing their patent of nobility.

Currently, the only know line of Tóth's to be descendants of these four brothers, resided in Tiszadob, in Szabolcs megye, Hungary. They were living in Tiszadob as early as 1725, and sometime prior to that they were from the Külsõ-Szolnok megye area (now known as the Heves megye area). It's to the south-west of Tiszadob, and not all entirely that far.

The family began small, with a single known progenitor in 1725 being a Mihály Tóth. Through my research, he has two known sons:
*István Tóth (abt1709-1786)
*Mihály Tóth (abt1716-1794).

István's wife, known from death/burial records from Tiszadob, is an Erzsébet Csetneki (abt1721-1789). Csetneki is not a known family to have lived in Tiszadob around the time they would have married, so I've made the assumption that Erzsébet must have been from a neighboring village. Mihály's wife is unknown.

According to a 1750 document about the family, which can be found in the Lelesz convent archives in the old Zemplén county, it gives this very small and brief explanation of the family: "Tóth István, Mihály fia, és Mihály, István fia". This essentially means that István had a son named Mihály, and Mihály had a son named István. This helps.. a lot!

My direct paternal line of descent for my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth, ends with two Mihály Tóth's. They also used the additional name of Boros, to help distinguish them from other noble and non-noble Mihály Tóth's in the town. They would appear as "Boros Tóth Mihály". The eldest died in 1818 at the age of 66, estimated birth would be abt 1752. He fits perfectly to be the son of the above mentioned István, who had a son Mihály.. although he was allegedly born two years after the document was created. This is a problem. After conducting my Tiszadob researching (and I'm STILL conducting research in Tiszadob), I've come to the conclusion that my Mihály is either a namesake for his elder sibling that died young.. or his estimated age is an error on his death record. Around the time he died, Tiszadob was notorious with giving incorrect ages on marriage records.. so why couldn't that be the case for deaths as well? I believe that's the case.

The direct maternal line of descent of my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth is also a noble Tóth line from Tiszadob. Yes, her father and mother were cousins.. 4th cousins. As you're guessing, Eszter.. through her mother.. descends from Mihály, who had a son named István. István was born about 1736 and died 1798. He was married to an Erzsébet Porkoláb, another noble family from Tiszadob. She was born about 1741 and died in 1788. Through them, I descend from another Mihály born around the same time as Mihály Boros "Jr". I can safely assume that this line of descent is correct, since Mihály Boros "Sr" wouldn't have had two sons with the first name Mihály. This wasn't the von Reuss family of Germany, who named all their male children Heinrich in honor of Heinrich VI, Holy Roman Emperor... yes, every single one of them. Talk about a boring and probably difficult family tree. haha

I haven't found any other mentions of a Tóth family in Hungary descending from these four original brothers, other than my Tiszadob Tóth's. If you believe you may descend from these four brothers, please contact me with your research!

She was born 30 May 1864 in Pickens County, Alabama to Baylis Grace Acker and Elizabeth Frances Clardy. She was married to my 1st cousin 4 times removed Lewis Banks Rodgers, Sr., on 04 Jan 1883 in Cherokee County, Texas. They had eleven children from 1883 to 1908!

Berzeviczy de Berzevicze, Mária:
She was born on 30 May 1895 in Eperjes, Sáros megye, Hungary. Her father was Elek Berzeviczy de Berzevicze and her mother was Anna Hrabéczy de Vágujhely. Mária is a very distant cousin of mine, and to date I'm related to her three times:

Blum, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1786 in Sulzbach, a tiny community in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Conrad Blum and Anna Maria Lauble. Georg's paternal 3rd-great-grandparents Christian and Magdalena Blum (born in 1590's) are my 10th-great-grandparents. Georg is my 4th cousin, 7 times removed.

Bodogh, Eugene John
Eugene was born 30 May 1912 in Alpha, Warren County, New Jersey. He was born to Kálmán Bódogh and Paulina Szankó. Kálmán was born in Nemesszalók, Veszprém megye, Hungary. This line of Bódogh's were a branch of my cousins who left Miskolc in Borsod megye and resettled in Veszprém megye. The earliest members of this branch that I know of are the two brothers János and István. János was the progenitor of the Veszprém megye branch and he was a reverend. He was born about 1809 and died 05 Dec 1880 in Mihályháza, Veszprém megye, Hungary. István was a land-owner in Felsõ-Iregh, Tolna megye, Hungary. I'm not sure if he had any children or descendants. I believe the two brothers may have been born in Miskolc.

Cielewich, Edmund Edward
Edmund was born 30 May 1899 in Medina, Orleans County, New York. His parents are William P. Cielewich and Anna C. Gottovi. I also descend from the Gottovi family, and Anna is my 2nd cousin, 5 times removed.

Savoy-Carignano, King Amadeus I of Spain
He was born 30 May 1845 to King Victor Emanuele II of Italy and his wife Maria Adelaide Habsburg-Lotharingen. I'm related to King Amadeus I of Spain through countless connections, but our closest link is 15th cousins, 9 times removed through our ancestor Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland. Amadeus's wife was Maria Laetitia Bonaparte, the great-niece of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Erwin, William Armstrong
He was born 30 May 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He was the son of James William Erwin, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Rodgers. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph Rodgers and Elizabeth Donaldson. My 5th-great-grandfather James Rodgers, is the brother of Joseph.

Habsburg, Claudia Felicitas
She was born 30 May 1653 to Ferdinand Charles Habsburg and Anna Medici. She was the wife of Leopold I, King of Hungry and Holy Roman Emperor. Claudia is a prime example of the extent of inbreeding with the royalty of Europe. Her paternal grandfather is the brother of her maternal grandmother. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of her maternal grandfather. Her paternal great-grandparents are the exact same as her maternal great-grandparents. It doesn't help her case that her ancestors married into more Habsburg and Medici lines. Our closest line of connection makes us 11th cousins, 10 times removed.

Kolpack, Herman Gustav
He was born 30 May 1860 in Western Prussia, Germany. He was the son of Christoph Kolpack and Karolina Majewska. Herman Gustav is the grandfather of Milton, the husband of my grandmother's step-sister, Gloria Flemming.

Porkoláb, Erzsébet
She was born 30 May 1835 in Tiszadob, to Lajos Porkoláb and Borbála Szabados. Erzsébet is my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.

Porkoláb, László
He was born 30 May 1855 in Tiszadob, to György Porkoláb and Erzsébet Tamási. I'm related to László through both the Porkoláb and Bódogh families. His paternal grandmother is my 5th great-aunt.

He was born 30 May 1919 in Montgomery County, Mississippi to Norman Lester Rodgers and Myrtle Pearl Bennett. Norman is the brother of my great-grandfather Fred Lamar Rodgers. Myrtle is my 2nd cousin, 4 times removed (twice, as her mother and father were first cousins).

Summ, Conrad
Conrad was born 30 May 1850 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johann Georg Summ and Anna Maria Schondelmaier. They were the owners at one point in time of the house called Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach. The house was passed onto Conrad's brother Jakob and then onto Jakob's daughter Christina. She was the last owner of the house until it became a museum. Conrad is the brother of my 3rd-great-grandfather Johann Georg Summ, who married Maria Blum.

Wöhrle, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1722 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johannes Wöhrle, a bauer in the community Herrenbach, and Maria Breithaupt, my 1st cousin, 10 times removed. Georg was married to Barbara Schüssele, on 25 May 1745 in Gutach. Barbara is my 2nd cousin, 9 times removed.

The Family of Károly Tóth and his wife Mária Tóth, of Tiszadob

Two weeks ago, I posted an entry about the first Hungarian document I found. That document is what began my entire search on my Hungarian ancestors. I thought it'd would be neat to show my documented work for a single family for each blog entry.

This entry will be focused on my great-great-grandmother's family. Her name was Eszter Tóth, and she was the daughter of Károly Tóth and Mária Tóth (who were 4th cousins). Károly and Mária were married on 09 Jan 1856 in Tiszadob, entry number 5. Károly was 20 years old and Mária was 19, both were from Tiszadob and were listed as földmives - farmers. Fortunately for me, the sister of Károly was married on the same day. Her name was Terézia Tóth and she was married to an Imre Németh. She was 17 and he was 26. Terézia was a földmives, like her brother Károly, and Imre was a mólnár - a miller. Here is their marriage record:



Their first child was named Károly. He was born 22 Nov 1856 and baptized a day later on the 23rd, both in Tiszadob. In his baptism record he is listed as "elsö-születt", which means "first-born". Károly only lived to be 10 years old. He died on 04 Jun 1867 in Tiszadob. The circumstances are quite sad for the death of Károly. According to his death record, he fell into some kind of pit or hole in the ground in the neighboring town of Szerencs, and drowned. Looking more into his death, it seems very odd. Szerencs is about 17 miles north of Tiszadob (where they were living) and would have been a good 5 hour walk. What was little 10-year-old Károly doing in Szerencs? Here is his baptism record:



Their second child was named Lajos. He was born 17 Oct 1860 and was baptized three days later on the 20th. I can only presume that Lajos lived to an old age, as he was married and had children. He was married to Borbála Balogh on 14 Sep 1884 in Tiszadob and had four children that I know of: Lenke (1886), Terézia (1888), Borbála (1891) and Lajos (1894). The record available to me end in 1895, so it's entirely possible that Lajos and Borbála had several more children. Here is his baptism record:



Their third child was László, a name-sake for his paternal grandfather. He was born on 01 Mar 1863 and was baptized two days later on the 3rd. László only lived to be two years old. He died on 25 Sep 1865 of "red smallpox". Here is his baptism record:



Their fourth child was Zsuzsánna. She was born on 04 Oct 1865 and was baptized a day later on the 5th. Zsuzsánna had two spouses and seven known children. Her first husband was László Porkoláb and they were married on 16 May 1883 in Tiszadob. They were divorced within a matter of two years, as László remarried in 1885 in the neighboring town of Tiszadada. He was divorced again and married four years later in Tiszadob. I feel bad for the women who had to deal with him, he must've been a real jerk. Anyway, Zsuzsánna was remarried to a man named Dániel Szuhai on 31 Dec 1888 in Tiszadob. It was with Dániel that Zsuzsánna had her children: Dávid (1889), Dávid (1891), András (1892), Bénjámin (1896), Dániel (abt 1905), Pearl (1908) and Samuel (abt 1909). It is to Dániel and Zsuzsánna that my great-great-grandparents (Sándor Gombás and Eszter Tóth) immigrated to when they came to America in 1909. Zsuzsánna died on 16 Nov 1937, in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Her and her husband are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Painesville, Ohio. They have many descendants still living today. Their fifth child was Mária. She was born 03 Oct 1871 and was baptized two days later on the 5th. Mária was married to Bálint Balogh on 29 Dec 1890. Bálint was the brother of Borbála Balogh, wife of Mária's brother Lajos. Mária and Bálint had a set of twin sons in 1891 named Máté and Bálint. As I stated before, the records available end in 1895, so they could have had more children that we don't know about yet. Here is her baptism record:



Their sixth and last child was Eszter, my great-great-grandmother. She was born on 22 Sep 1874 and was baptized two days later on the 24th. On 13 Mar 1895 in Tiszadob, she was married to Sándor Gombás from the neighboring village called Büdszentmihály. Sándor came to America in 1902. Eszter followed suit and came a year later in 1903. While during her stay she had two children, Susan (1904) and Gyula (1906). She returned to Hungary with her daughter Susan and then finally came to America for good with her children in 1909. Sándor and Eszter had a total of eleven children: Alex (1896), Sándor? (1897), Balázs/Robert (1898), József (1900), Susan (1904), Gyula/Julius (1906), Esther (1910), Sophie (1912), Elizabeth "Betty" (1913), Dallas "Casey" (1916) and Julia (1920). Sándor died on 02 May 1931 in Goff, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Eszter died on 04 Apr 1950 in Richland Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. They're both buried in the "Old Anadale" Eau Claire Cemetery, in Venango, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Here is her baptism record:

My First Hungarian Document

The first Hungarian document I ever found was the marriage of my paternal great-great-grandparents, Sándor Gombás and Eszter Tóth. I found this record in February or March of 2003, and it's what began all my research into my Hungarian ancestors. They were married on 13 Mar 1895 in Tiszadob, Szabolcs megye, Hungary. From this union they would have eleven children, eight of which surviving to become adults.



In the marriage record it gives their town of birth/residence as well as their birth dates in the "notes" column to the right. Sándor Gombás was born 02 Feb 1872 in Büdszentmihály and Eszter Tóth was born 22 Sep 1874 in Tiszadob. The witnesses to the marriage were an Mihályi Enyi from Büdszentmihály and a Sándor Porkoláb of Tiszadob, a brother-in-law to Eszter's sister Zsuzsánna. Zsuzsánna was married for a short time (until they divorced) to László Porkoláb, who was the brother to Sándor.

Record Search Findings: Obit for Rózsa Porkoláb, 1899

This obituary is for a (newly found) distant relative of mine: Rózsa Porkoláb de Nagyváth és Mágoch. She was the wife of Pál Megyery de Vasmegyer. She died on 10 Dec 1899 in Debrecen and was buried on 12 Dec 1899, probably in Debrecen.

The obituary lists her surviving family. Her son Doctor István Megyery (wife Sarolta Kornis), and their children Ella, Irma and Sarolta. Her second son Doctor Pál Megyery (wife Mária Nánássy), and their children Lilla, Erzsébet and Pál.

Record Search Findings: A 1919 Budapest Marriage

A few months ago, I found a marriage for cousin of mine in Budapest. His name is Bénjámin Porkoláb, and he was born in Tiszadob on 30 Jul 1894 to Bénjámin Porkoláb and Juliánna Pethe (de Kis-Szántó). I am related to Bénjámin (the son) through at least four different lines. They are the Porkoláb family (3rd cousin, 4 times removed), Bódogh family (5th cousin, 3 times removed), Varga family (5th cousin, 4 times removed) and the Pethe de Kis-Szántó family (connection unknown as of yet). His mother, Juliánna, comes from the neighboring town of Büdszentmihály, and was born about 1857. I need to research her baptism and connect her into my Pethe de Kis-Szántó family.

Bénjámin was married to a woman named Ilona Petrovics, on 07 May 1919 in Budapest District I. She was born 12 Aug 1900 in Csobánka, Pest megye (county), to Zsigmond Petrovics and Ilona Streit. Bénjámin was living at Krisztina körét 112 and Ilona was living at Koronaőr utca 19. The witnesses to the marriage were János Paulovics, living at Koronaőr utca 19, and Henrik Qertel, living at Márvány utca 38.

My Porkoláb Family

I deceided to write a blog devoted entirely to the family of my 6th-great-grandmother: the Porkoláb family.

My 6th-great-grandmother was Erzsébet Porkoláb, born about 1741 and died 13 Jun 1788, both in Tiszadob. She was married to István Tóth, a nobleman, sometime after 1757 in Tiszadob. I have an extensive genealogy of the Porkoláb family. It begins in 1635 and ranges to present time, and consists of 41 pages of 13 generations of descendants. The Porkoláb family was THE largest family in Tiszadob, and they were known as such.

I believe I've been able to connect Erzsébet Porkoláb into the very beginnings of the family tree, as a daughter of Márton Porkoláb. He was known as Márton 'Szakálas'.. or Márton 'the Bearded'. He was known by this nick-name because his only male first cousin was also named Márton. This cousin was known as Márton 'Katona'.. or Márton 'the Soldier'.

Márton 'Szakálas' was the son of Jákób Porkoláb and Márton 'Katona' was the son of János Porkoláb. Jákób and János are the sons of the original progenitors of the family, Márton Porkoláb and his wife Dorottya Baranyai. They also had another son named Mihály, who had no known male issue.

Márton Porkoláb, his wife Dorottya Baranyai and their three sons were granted nobility on 09 Feb 1635 by King Ferdinand II. It was later recorded in Petneháza in 1650. They were also granted a coat of arms, which you can see below:

Not much is known about the ancestors of Márton Porkoláb and his wife Dorottya Baranyai. In the beginning of the patent of nobility for Márton it states: "agilis (anyai részrõl nemes) Porkoláb Márton hûségét és hû szolgálatait". This means "agile (mother's noble side) Porkoláb Márton loyalty and faithful services". So apparently Márton's mother's family was already noble. But, I haven't found anything to connect them in anywhere.

What's Been Going On Lately

I've been doing a lot more Hungarian research lately, in several new towns.  And i've been doing some new nobility research in Zemplén megye as well.  I'm finding that our great-great-grandmother Eszter (Tóth) Gombash's family is much more complex and diverse than I originally thought.

Only a week or two ago, I found the death record for her 2nd great-grandmother, Zsuzsánna (Fekete) Szük.  She died in 1791 at the young age of 38.  What I found in her death record was what I had been hoping for, the mention of 'nemes'.. which of course means 'noble' in Hungarian.  There was another noble Fekete family in the same village, and I have a feeling it might be her nephew's family.  I'm going to have to track this noble Fekete family down.  Just a fun fact; 'Fekete' means 'Black' when translated into English.

As of right now for Eszter (Tóth) Gombash, I have her descending from 6 distinct noble families: Tóth (in 1580), Bódogh (in 1611), Porkoláb (in 1635), Szük (in 1690, possibly previously in 1638), Fekete (unknown date) and Miskolczy (unknown date).

The Miskolczy family comes through Erzsébet Miskolczy.  She was  Eszter (Tóth) Gombash's 3rd great-grandmother.  Erzsébet was born about 1710 and married to András Szük.. they lived in Taktaszada.  There was a very well-to-do land owning Miskolczy family in the neighboring town Mád.  A Péter Miskolczy held possessions in Mád from at least 1670 to 1689.  I believe him to be Erzsébet's grandfather.  This Miskolczy family that resided in Mád was the korponai Miskolczy family, or otherwise known as Miskolczy de Korpona.  This family was a branch of the pávai Miskolczy family (Miskolczy de Páva).  This was a Transylvanian family.  Their coat of arms was recorded in Count Teleki's family archives in Marosvásárhely, Transylvania.  I have ordered the receords for this coat of arms; they should be arriving at my local FHC any day now.  Hopefully there will be some kind of nobility information along with the coat of arms.

Tiszadob, Hungary: Eszter Tóth's Ancestry & Family; March 08, 2008

It's been a while since I last wrote, so I decided to write a new entry.  I've done an extensive amount of research in the Tiszadob church parish registers.  In my first entry I mentioned how I had 1,255 individuals from Tiszadob in my database.  After just under a month's worth of research, I now have 1,602.. that's 347 new individuals!

I've also received an email from a wonderful woman named Linda (Toki) Walters, who is a distant relative of ours through the Bódogh family.  Her contacting me with information has added a whole new line of descendancy information to the family tree!

I've recently been thinking about adding a section to the website devoted to the nobility of Tiszadob, which involves our family.. and those that tie into our family.  Of the 1,602 individuals in my database, 699 of them are of noble birth.. so far.  I'm sure I've skipped a few that I need to find.  They're mostly from these families:
