Surname Saturday #28: Szük

I've been interested in this family for quite some time now, mainly because of how rare and unique the surname is. I love when I'm working with a rare and uncommon surname in Hungary, it makes the records for that family "pop" out, and it makes the research just that much more exciting. Surname Saturday #27: Bódogh

The Bódogh family is by far my absolute favorite family I have ever researched, and am continually doing so. I became obsessed with anything to do with the Bódogh family in 2004, when I found within the Borsod county archives' nobility records, copies of nobility records pertaining to the Bódogh family's nobility investigation. It contained 118 documents full of details about the family.. and the best part, hand-drawn pedigrees of the Bódogh family tree! To date (29 Dec 2012), I have 1,607 known descendants of János Bódogh and his wife Anna Péterváradi, the earliest known progenitors of the Bódogh family. Here is my line to them:

Genealogy Time Machine

If you're like myself, you're constantly wishing you could speak to a long-deceased ancestor. Even just for a minute or two. This happened to me tonight and it got me to thinking.. why not blog about it? So here are my absolute top three choices of who, when, where and why I would go back in time.

#1
Who: My 2nd-great-grandmother, Eszter Tóth Gombás
When: October 1909
Where: Ellis Island
Why: According to family stories, she brought along with her while immigrating from Hungary to America, documents on her noble heritage and family tree. Within these documents was information detailing a family connection to a king from about 600 years ago. I know much of her ancestry, but I would do anything to know what details she knew on her noble Hungarian heritage.

#2
Who: Hiram Howell
When: 1853
Where: Tippah County, Mississippi
Why: I want to know all the details of his murder! Why did his son-in-law, Lindsey Slaughter, shoot and kill him? And why wasn't he convicted of murder?

#3
Who: My 3rd-great-grandmother, Ellen Hovis Martin
When: Late 1830's
Where: Lincoln County, North Carolina
Why: She was an illegitimate daughter of first cousins. She lived in a house with her mother and two other illegitimate children, on land that her paternal grandfather had specifically given to her mother.. to provide for her. Ellen's biological father died when she was only 5 years old. It would be amazing to peak into the life of Ellen in her pre-teen years, to see what kind of hardships she was going through and what life was like for her, her mother and her siblings.

I would love to hear your top three choices! Share them in the comments or post the link from the blog post!

The Nobility of Demeter Szük in 1690

Yesterday, I was able to obtain a written transcription from the 1730's of the 1690 patent of nobility that was issued to my 8th-great-grandfather, Demeter Szük. He was granted the nobility on 09 Jun 1690 by King Lipót I of Hungary, and was later recorded in Nagy-Ida, Abaúj county, Hungary on 11 Jan 1691. The four following images are copies of the transcription written in the 1730's. It has some great information on it! :)

Some information regarding their nobility:

*A document dated 05 July 1775 from the Szabolcs county nobility investigation papers, lists a nobleman named "Michaël Tóth" living in Tiszadob. It mentions that his family received nobility from King Rudolf I and that the nobility as well as a genealogy was recorded in Szolnok county. No date of when the nobility was received was given.

*In the publication, "Magyarország vármegyéi és városai", by Sámuel Borovszky, it states the following:
Tóth family, entry 4. Nobility received from King Rudolf. Recorded in Külsõ-Szolnok county. Tóth Mihály a resident of Tiszadob in 1725.

*In the publication, "Turul 1883-1950", by the Hungarian Heraldry and Genealogy Society, it states in the 1895-3 issue the following:
The brothers "Tóth Imre, Benedek, Jakab és Ambrus" received nobility from Rudolf in 1580. It was recorded in Lelesz, by Tóth István, son of Mihály and Tóth Mihály, son of István.

*In the publication, "Siebmacher's Wappenbuch", it gives a full detailed description (in German) of the coat of arms of the Tóth family. It also states that the family received nobility from King Rudolf, in Prague, on 26 Feb 1580. It was later recorded in 1583 in Eger, Heves county. It was issued to the brothers "Emerich, Benedikt, Jacob u. Ambrosius Tóth".

Miklós Horthy: An Admiral & Regent of Hungary

Miklós Horthy was born into a family of mixed religions and backgrounds. His paternal family were middle-class to upper nobility and were of the Calvanist (Reformed) religion.  His maternal side was half middle-class and upper nobility, as well as German. I did some research in Miklós' family tree, and these are my results.

Miklós was born on 18 Jun 1868 and baptized on 10 Jul 1868, in Kenderes, Jász-Nagy-Kun-Szolnok, Hungary. He was the son of István Horthy de Nagy-Bánya and Paula Halasy de Dévaványa. Make note in his baptismal record of this parent's religions; his father is listed as Reformed and his mother as Roman Catholic.

Research into István's family yields that he was born on 13 Feb 1830 and baptized on 17 Feb 1830, in Ramocsaháza, Szabolcs, Hungary, to István Horthy de Nagy-Bánya and Amália Puky de Bizák. Make note of his well-off godparents: Baron Pál Bánffy de Losoncz and his wife, Amália Borbély de Tiszaroff.

A marriage record for István and Amália provides a tiny bit more information; Amália was a resident of Tiszaroff. They were married on 31 May 1827 in Ramocsaháza, Szabolcs, Hungary.

Although Amália was living in Tiszaroff at the time of her marriage, she was born in a different town: Pánd, Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kis-Kun, Hungary. She was baptized on 26 Jul 1805 and was the daughter of Simon Puky de Bizák and his wife, Borbála Borbély de Tiszaroff. Her residence in Tiszaroff makes sense now, as her mother's family owned land in the town.

Going back into Ramocsaháza, you can find the baptism of István, Amália Puky's husband. He was baptized on 02 Dec 1795 and was the son of László Horthy de Nagy-Bánya.

Starting from the beginning, I went back to Miklós Horthy's mother, Paula Halasy. She was baptized on 18 Mar 1838 in Kenderes, Jász-Nagy-Kun-Szolnok, Hungary. Her full name listed on her baptismal record is listed as "Paulina Alexandrina Katalin Josepha". She is the daughter of József Halasy de Dévaványa and his wife Erzsébet Gerber. The godparents to her baptism were Ferencz Gerzon and his wife, Baroness Katalin Vay de Vaja.

Research into further books and nobility resources yielded more information, which you can find detailed in the pedigree chart above. Any information concerning Erzsébet Gerber's parents would be greatly appreciated.

The Family Tree of French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy is the son of a Hungarian father and a French and Greek mother. His father was born a Hungarian nobleman, named Pál István Ernő Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa (in Hungarian: nagybócsai Sárközy). This post will highlight on the information I was able to find on Nicolas Sárközy's family tree, beginning with his father Pál.

The marriage record of György Sándor Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa and wife Katalin Ilona Anna Tóth de Csáford. They were married on 20 Sep 1921, in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary. It states that Dr. György Sándor Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa was born on 16 Mar 1896, in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary. He was the son of György Sárközy de Nagy-Bócsa and Róza Juhász. The bride was Katalin Ilona Anna Tamás Tóth de Csáford. She was born on 13 Jan 1902 in Szolnok, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hungary and was the daughter of Imre Tóth de Csáford and Adél Jeney de Boros-Jenő.

Why You Should Re-Examine Your Documents

There are times when we find documents and we seem to miss a few specific clues. We may be excited about our new find, or rushed for time and don't fully analyze all the wording. Whatever the case, it really does pay off to look over your documents and records every now and then. I do this every-so-often and find things I happen to have over-looked. I know I'm probably not the only one out there! Here is a great example that happened to me only a few days ago.

I was reviewing a few documents I received from a cousin around April 2010, that pertained to my noble Porkoláb family from Tiszadob, Hungary. The document is called "kihallgatás", which translates literally to mean "interrogation". The document is more of a testimony than it is an interrogation. On the second page, it explains in full detail the fourth testimony for the Porkoláb family by a Mihály Rácz. With-in this testimony, Mihály Rácz talks about an aged Márton Porkoláb with the nickname "szakálas" (bearded) and an István Zákány, from another known noble family living in Tiszadob. On the last few lines it states the following in Hungarian: "az öreg szakálas Porkoláb Mártonnak - kinek felesége Zákány leány vólt". This means "the aged 'bearded' Porkoláb Márton, whose wife was the daughter of Zákány".

"Szakálas" Porkoláb Márton lived before the time of recorded church records, in Tiszadob. So other than this document that list's his wife's (partial) name, she would've been lost to history forever. She has never been mentioned in any known document that I have for the Porkoláb family.

It really does pay to look over your previously found documents!

My noble Tóth family of Tiszadob, Hungary

My Tóth family's nobility is old, and the family is very distinct. They were given their nobility in 1580 by King Rudolf I of Hungary, also Holy Roman Emperor and was from the house of Habsburg. It was granted to four (4) brothers: Imre (Emerich), Benedek (Benedict), Jakab (Jacob) and Ambrúzs (Ambrose). You can see my previous blog entry HERE containing their patent of nobility.

Currently, the only know line of Tóth's to be descendants of these four brothers, resided in Tiszadob, in Szabolcs megye, Hungary. They were living in Tiszadob as early as 1725, and sometime prior to that they were from the Külsõ-Szolnok megye area (now known as the Heves megye area). It's to the south-west of Tiszadob, and not all entirely that far.

The family began small, with a single known progenitor in 1725 being a Mihály Tóth. Through my research, he has two known sons:
*István Tóth (abt1709-1786)
*Mihály Tóth (abt1716-1794).

István's wife, known from death/burial records from Tiszadob, is an Erzsébet Csetneki (abt1721-1789). Csetneki is not a known family to have lived in Tiszadob around the time they would have married, so I've made the assumption that Erzsébet must have been from a neighboring village. Mihály's wife is unknown.

According to a 1750 document about the family, which can be found in the Lelesz convent archives in the old Zemplén county, it gives this very small and brief explanation of the family: "Tóth István, Mihály fia, és Mihály, István fia". This essentially means that István had a son named Mihály, and Mihály had a son named István. This helps.. a lot!

My direct paternal line of descent for my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth, ends with two Mihály Tóth's. They also used the additional name of Boros, to help distinguish them from other noble and non-noble Mihály Tóth's in the town. They would appear as "Boros Tóth Mihály". The eldest died in 1818 at the age of 66, estimated birth would be abt 1752. He fits perfectly to be the son of the above mentioned István, who had a son Mihály.. although he was allegedly born two years after the document was created. This is a problem. After conducting my Tiszadob researching (and I'm STILL conducting research in Tiszadob), I've come to the conclusion that my Mihály is either a namesake for his elder sibling that died young.. or his estimated age is an error on his death record. Around the time he died, Tiszadob was notorious with giving incorrect ages on marriage records.. so why couldn't that be the case for deaths as well? I believe that's the case.

The direct maternal line of descent of my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth is also a noble Tóth line from Tiszadob. Yes, her father and mother were cousins.. 4th cousins. As you're guessing, Eszter.. through her mother.. descends from Mihály, who had a son named István. István was born about 1736 and died 1798. He was married to an Erzsébet Porkoláb, another noble family from Tiszadob. She was born about 1741 and died in 1788. Through them, I descend from another Mihály born around the same time as Mihály Boros "Jr". I can safely assume that this line of descent is correct, since Mihály Boros "Sr" wouldn't have had two sons with the first name Mihály. This wasn't the von Reuss family of Germany, who named all their male children Heinrich in honor of Heinrich VI, Holy Roman Emperor... yes, every single one of them. Talk about a boring and probably difficult family tree. haha

I haven't found any other mentions of a Tóth family in Hungary descending from these four original brothers, other than my Tiszadob Tóth's. If you believe you may descend from these four brothers, please contact me with your research!

The Gombash's Very Distant Spanish Ancestry

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you know very well that my family, the Gombash's, are of Hungarian descent. Through-out my research I find new documents and records that shed light on the diversity of my Hungarian heritage. Through our Hungarian ancestry we're also Slavic, Swedish and Transylvanian. Now with some new research on our noble origins, I'm discovering that we're very distantly Spanish.

Through Eszter Tóth, we descend from the old and now extinct Nagy-Martoni family. The Nagy-Martoni began in Hungary with three brothers Bertram, Simon, Michael and their sister Tota. In 1198, the four siblings left their home of Aragón in Spain to accompany Constance, who was bethrothed to King Imre of Hungary. Much was recorded about the Nagy-Martoni family as several members of the family became quite powerful and well-to-do.

Modern location of Aragón in Spain

I was able to find an English source that wrote about the family: [At the court there were people who understood Provençal, because Constance had brought some families from Iberia with her. The most famous were the three brothers, Bertram, Simon and Michael, who freed Mallorca and Minorca from the Saracens, and had to leave Southern Spain because of the Almohadian invasions. They fought against the heathen in Hungary too. In 1241 "Simon Hispanus" and Bertram played a decisive role in the successful defence of the Hungarian capital city of Esztergom against the Tartars. In 1204 the Hungarian King gave a village to the sister of the three knights, a "beautiful" Tota and the Spanish family received its Hungarian name from that village. Later they were known as the counts Nagy-Martoni/or the Fraknói or the Bajóti family.] (1).

Seal of Simon Nagy-Martoni's son Pál

There was another additional English source that described in more detail the sister Tota: [Constance brought with her a girl called Tota, the sister of Count Simon and Count Bertram. She was exceedingly beautiful, so fair, indeed, that scarcely any woman in the world in those days was considered her like. This girl was given in marriage to Duke Benedict, son of Conrad, and her dowry was the town of Martinsdorf, a gift from King Emeric and Queen Constance.] (2).

Interestingly enough, I descend from King Imre's sister Margit through my mother's family.

Queen Elizabeth II related to Vlad Dracula?

Yesterday I wrote an article explaining the connection between the current reigning English monarchy and Vlad Dracula, otherwise known as Vlad "the Impaler". It showed their connection, not a relation. A new line of descent was brought to my attention last night that I need to analyze, and I thought I would do it here. Here is the alleged line of descent of Queen Elizabeth II to Vlad Dracula's father, Vlad II Dracul:

*Elizabeth II
*George VI
*Mary of Teck
*Francis, Duke of Teck
*Klaudia Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde
*Countess Ágnes Inczédy de Nagy-Várad
*Baron Gergely Inczédy de Nagy-Várad
*Baroness Ágnes Kendeffy de Malmoviz
*Katalin Kun de Osdola
*Kristina (Christiana) Racz de Galgo
*Peter (Petru) Racz de Galgo
*Adam Racz de Galgo
*Zamphira Logofat de Szazsebes (Female)
*Stanka (Stanca) Basarab of Wallachia (Female)
*Mircea "The Shepherd" (Voivode) of Wallachia (Male)
*Radu cel Mare Radu IV `the Great' (Voivode) of Wallachia
*Vlad Călugărul (half-brother to Vlad Dracula)
*Vlad II Dracul (father to Vlad Dracula)

My previous article focuses on Klaudia Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde's paternal lineage, this alleged descent focuses on Klaudia's maternal lineage. We do know that Klaudia's parents are Count László Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde and his wife Baroness Ágnes Inczédy de Nagy-Várad. Ágnes is the known granddaughter of Baron Gergely Inczédy de Nagy-Várad and his wife Countess Ágnes Kendeffy de Malmoviz.

According to pedigree charts published by Iván Nagy in Magyarország családai, Ágnes Kendeffy de Malmoviz is most definitely the daughter of Gáspár Kendeffy de Malmoviz and his wife Katalin Kún. No other information is given on Katalin Kún in the Kendeffy family's pedigrees and information.

No additional information is given on Katalin Kún in Béla Kempelen's word Magyar Nemes Családok, and neither in any of these other following publications: Magyar nemzetségi zsebkönyv by the Magyar Heraldikai és Genealogiai Társaság (Hungarian Heraldry and Genealogy Society), A Magyar Nemzetségek A XIV. Század Közepéig by János Karácsonyi and finally Középkori Magyar Genealógia by Pál Engel.

Assuming that the alleged family tree is correct, Ágnes Kendeffy's mother is possibly Katalin Kun de Osdola. Considering I cannot find any additional information on Katalin Kún under the Kendeffy's, I must look under the Kún's and hope for the best. I do locate a countly Kún de Osdola family, but I do not locate any Katalin being married to a Gáspár Kendeffy.

There are, although, some interesting marriages and connections to known family names of Gáspár Kendeffy de Malmoviz and his wife Katalin Kún's descendants. Note the two (2) Rhédey's, the Kendeffy and also the Inczedy. The alleged ancestry above states that Katalin Kun's mother was a Kristina Racz de Galgo. There is indeed a Krisztina Rácz married to Miklós Kún do Osdola, right smack-dab in the middle of all the name connections. But that doesn't mean anything, we need proof that they are our Katalin Kún's parents.

Let's assume that Katalin Kún's parents are indeed Miklós Kún do Osdola and Krisztina Rácz shown on the pedigree chart. Continuing analyzing the alleged line of descent stated above, we need to look into the "Rácz de Galgo" family.

I locate a Rácz de Galgó family and indeed there is a Krisztina, who's second husband was a Miklós Kún. The pedigree chart fits perfectly with what was given on the alleged pedigree above. It does show the line of descent to a Zafira Logofét. The entry on the Rácz de Galgó family also gives some information on Zafira; it states: "neje oláh származású volt: Logofét Zafira". This says that Zafira Logofét (surnames are always listed before the given names in Hungary and Transylvania), was originally from Wallachia (Oláh). This seems to continually fit, as Vlad Dracula's family was from Wallachia and Vlad himself was once Voivode of Wallachia.

This is when my research starts to dry up with my Hungarian resources that I have. The resources are primarily for Hungary, not Transylvania. I now go to a trusted source for nobility and royalty information: http://genealogy.euweb.cz/. This website was created by Miroslav Marek and he has a whole page devoted to his sources. The alleged ancestry above from Zamphira Logofat de Szazsebes to Vlad II Dracul is correct, according to his website.. which I do not doubt. The only problem is with "Stanka (Stanca) Basarab of Wallachia". It lists her husband as "Ioan Norocea, Logofat de Pitesti, Great Chancellor of Wallachia", but no children (Zafira) are listed for them or can be found on his website. Also note that the name is "Logofat de Pitesti", not the "Logofat de Szazsebes" listed in the alleged pedigree.

All in all, the line of descent from Queen Elizabeth II to Vlad II Dracul, the father of Vlad "the Impaler", is very possible. The only contradictory facts, that need to be proven, lie with Katalin Kún and Zafira Logofat. Does anyone have any sources to prove or disprove these two remaining pieces of this alleged line of descent? If so, please contact me!

Robert Pattinson is related to Dracula?

Today while doing my daily genealogy blog readings, I stumbled upon Randy Seaver's article Is Robert Pattinson a cousin to Vlad the Impaler?. I was instantly intriuged because I myself have a connection to Vlad Dracula Tepes "the Impaler".

Reading his article, I find that the entry originated with a article posted today (June 24th) on the UK version of Ancestry's Blog. You can find the article here: Twilight star Robert Pattinson is related to Dracula!. Reading the article and looking at the [very] tiny hard to see pedigree, I become confused and dumbfounded.

The article was written by Annabel Bernhardt, the PR Manager for Ancestry.co.uk. In the article she claims that King George VI of England is a direct descendant of Vlad II Dracul, the father of Vlad III Dracula.. otherwise known as Vlad "the Impaler". At this point I could care less about Robert Pattinson's connection to Vlad, or even the current reigning English monarchy. I needed to clear the air of King George VI's ancestry.

King George VI of England is a descendant of countless royal and noble houses of Europe, but one: the Basarab family of Transylvania. The Basarab's were a very large Transylvanian family with powerful aristocratic, noble and also royal connections. It is through these that Vlad "the Impaler" is connected to King George VI and his descendants, not related.

King George VI's mother is the well-known Mary of Teck, wife of King George V of England. Mary's paternal grandmother was the Countess Klaudina Zsuzsánna Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde. Klaudina ia a documented descendant of the Szilágyi de Horoszeg family. The connection with the current England monarchy is through this Szilágyi family. The wife of Vlad "the Impaler" was a noblewoman from that same Szilágyi de Horoszeg family. Here is the descend of Klaudina to the Szilágyi de Horoszeg family:

Klaudina Zsuzsánna Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde is the great-granddaughter of László Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde and his wife Mária Toroczkay de Toroczkó-Szent-György. Mária herself is the daughter of István Toroczkay de Toroczkó-Szent-György and his wife Borbála Kapy de Kapivár.

In this next pedigree chart, you see that Borbála Kapy de Kapivár is the descendant of Miklós Kapy de Kapivár and his wife Katalin Lipcsey de Nagy-Lucse. Katalin is the daughter of Damian Lipcsey de Nagy-Lucse and his wife Margit Macedóniai de Macedónia.

This next pedigree shows that Margit Macedóniai de Macedónia is the granddaughter of János Macedóniai de Macedónia and his wife Anna de Gara.

You can see this this next pedigree that Anna de Gara is the great-granddaughter of Dezső de Gara and his wife Anna Szilágyi de Horogszeg.

This final pedigree chart does not show Anna, but she is a known granddaughter of Miklós de Szilágy, alive in 1408. She is the daughter of Mihály, who was the uncle to Erzsébet. Erzsébet was the wife of János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary, and mother of Mátyás Corvinus, King of Hungary. Vlad Dracula "the Impaler"'s wife is the known daughter of Osvát, brother of the previously mentioned Erzsébet.

A lot of false pedigree and assumptions are made when it comes to celebrities, royalty and family trees. Embellishments are made and facts are not documented and sourced. I'm honestly a little upset that this fabricated pedigree for King George VI of England shows that he is a direct-line descendant of the Transylvanian Basarab family. This is false and there is no given proof by Annabel Bernhardt of her sources for this information.

The Family of László Tóth and his wife Zsuzsánna Bódogh, of Tiszadob

My last blog entry was focused on the family of my 3rd-great-grandparents, Károly Tóth and Mária Tóth. Today I'm going to detail Károly Tóth's parents and siblings.

Károly was the son of László Tóth and his wife, Zsuzsánna Bódogh. Both László and Zsuzsánna were born into noble Hungarian families. I have sourced the Tóth family's nobility back to four brothers on 26 Feb 1580, recorded three years later in Heves county in 1583. The four brothers are Ambruzs, Benedek, Imre and Jakab Tóth. Not much is known about them other than their names at the moment. I have sourced the Bódogh family back to 11 Jan 1611 with two brothers: Mihály and Péter. Them and their descendants were known to have lived in Miskolc and the Borsod county area.

László and Zsuzsánna were married on 15 Jan 1834 in Tiszadob. He was 19 years old and she was 17 years old. The witnesses to their marriage were István Horváth and István Vámos, who were not relatives. Note the word "nemes" before László's name in the marriage record. "Nemes" translates to mean "noble" in English.

Their first child was named Zsuzsánna and she was born the same year her parents were married, on 11 Nov 1834. She was baptized three days later on the 14th. She died two days later on 16 Nov 1834. Here is her baptism record:

Their second child was Károly. He was born on 09 Dec 1835 and baptized two days later on the 11th. You can find the information on him and his family on my previous post here. Here is his baptism record:

Their third and final child was Terézia. She was born on 29 Nov 1838 and was baptized two days later on 01 Dec 1838. Her marriage was mentioned in my previous blog about her brother Károly's family. You can find her marriage record here. Terézia was married to Imre Németh on 09 Jan 1856 in Tiszadob, the same day as her brother's marriage. Terézia and Imre had a total of six children: Terézia (1856), Zsófia (1858), Imre (1861), László (1864), Zsófia (1866) and János (1869). All of their children except one died: Terézia in 1856. The daughter Terézia went on to marry a farmer from Tiszaszederkény named Gergely Kis, on 29 Nov 1876. No baptisms for children are found for them in Tiszadob. Here is Terézia's (the mother) baptism record:

László died on 23 Nov 1870 at the age of 56 years old. On his death record he was listed as a "biró" - a judge. Zsuzsánna died seven years later on 10 Feb 1878, at the age of 62 years old.

Bogát-Radván Genus - Bogát-Radván Nemzetség

The Bogát-Radván genus dates itself back to the 13th century. The genus begins with a man named Bogát who according to Simon Kézai, a famous Hungarian chronicler from the 13th centuery, came from Bohemia (Csehország). Bogát had two known sons and they were named István and Fülke (sometimes written as Fülöpke). Fülke was murdered sometime before 1252 by a relative of the same genus named Csiz (sometimes written as Chyz). Csiz was the son of Csépán, who may have been a brother or first cousin to Bogát.

The original home of the Bogát-Radván genus was the late Zemplén county. Although the Bogát-Radván genus may have held early noble titles, documentation is lost in those areas on the family. The only information that is known on the early crest of the family is a bird. That bird can be found on many of the coat of arms of the direct-line descendants of the Bogát-Radván genus. [Note the several coat of arms included in this blog post.]

Here are the families who can trace their origins to the Bogát-Radván genus:

There were many Bogát-Radván descendants who were prominent members in Hungarian history. In 1558, Balázs Hosszúmezey was the alispán of Zemplén county. In 1560 the same Balázs was then commissioned by the Hungarian king to calm down the disturbances in Upper-Hungary. György Hosszúmezey became the Parliamentary ambassador for Zemplén county in 1578. A László Körtvélyessy was alispán of Zemplén county in 1597. In 1835 a László Isépy was a juror and later in 1843 he was a magistrate, both for Zemplén county. In the late 14th century, an István Monoky was a canon-guard of Székesfehérvár. Mihály Monoky was captured at Monoki castle and held captive by the Turks in 1566. He later paid his own ransom for his release. Miklós Monoky repeatedly held of the Turks as captain of Ónodi in 1607, and in 1625 was created a Baron by king Ferdinand II. György Morvay was present at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, it's not stated whether he lived or died in battle. Sándor Rákóczy was a magistrate of Bars and Zólyom counties in the late 18th century. Sándor's brother Ádám was a laywer in Pest (prior to the city's merging to create Budapest). There was a line of Transylvanian Princes from the Rákóczy family. It began with Zsigmond (1544-1608) and passed from father to son: György (died 1648), György (1621-1660), Ferencz (1645-1676) and finally Ferencz (1676-1735).

What's Been Going On Lately

I've been neglecting my blog really bad lately.. I want to say sorry to my faithful readers out there. You know who you are. :)

I've been busy and preoccupied with a few things going on lately. First is my cousin's Bat Mitzvah, which is tomorrow. There's been months of set up and preparation and I'll be happy when it's over. The other reason I've been busy is I've been doing a lot of research lately.

Last week today, I went to the Newberry Library in Chicago with my friend Cathy. That place is amazing! I didn't even get through half the list of books I wanted to look at, but I found so much information and great leads on my brick-wall Howell family. My Howell's are dead-ended with a Hiram Howell and wife Rachel. They were born in the 1780's-1790's and lived in Western TN and finally Tippah County, Mississippi in the last years of their lives. Hiram was actually murdered in 1853! Hiram and Rachel were married sometime before 1810 in Tennessee and I believe they had somewhere around ten children, eight boys and two girls. One of the girls was Temperance, my 4th-great-grandmother. She was married to George W. Vance about 1844 (place and date unknown) and they had seven children, before George suddenly died in 1859-1860. He was only about 33 when he died... another possible murder? Hopefully further research will yield those answers.

I've also been pretty busy researching my Hungarian nobility. Through my 9th-great-grandmother, Margit Berzeviczy who married István Horváth de Perlak, I descend from many large and old noble families of Hungary.. some with very powerful connections. Here are some of the families I descend from through Margit's ancestry. If you descend from any of these please contact me, we're cousins!

*Bánffy de Gara (garai Bánffy) - genus Drusma
*Bárczay de Bárcza (bárczai Bárczay)
*Berthóthy de Berthót (berthóti Berthóthy) - genus Aba
*Berzeviczy de Berzevicze (berzeviczei Berzeviczy)
*Bocskay de Bocskó (bocskói Bocskay) - genus Boksa
*Buchai de Bucha (buchai Buchai)
*Cseley de Csele (cselei Cseley) - genus Bogáth-Radván
*Csúzy de Csúz és Puszta-Szent-Mihály (csúzi és puszta-szent-mihályi Csúzy)

*Szilágyi de Horogszeg (horogszegi Szilágyi)
*Szini de Teresztény (teresztényi Szini)
*Zombory de Zombor (zombori Zombory)

I've also been working on something for my website Hungary Exchange that I hope a lot of people will find useful. It's guides on how to read and decipher church parish records. It explains how to read baptism, marriage and burial records and I'm doing three records of each of those events for each of the religions in Hungary. There's the Civil Registration, Evangelical, Greek Catholic, Jewish, Reformed and Roman Catholic. So there would be a total of nine (9) guides for each religion, totaling 54 pages of guides when I'm completely finished. At the moment I have 100% of Reformed complete, 2/3 of Greek Catholic complete and 2/3 of Jewish complete. I hope to have it up soon.

All you Hungarian genealogists, please visit my website and submit the surnames you're researching in Hungary. The Surname Database already has 125 Hungarian surnames posted, so check it out!

My Connection To Queen Elizabeth II

Recently, I was able to connect my ancestor, Margit Berzeviczy, into the very well documented and very old noble Berzeviczy de Berzevicze family. Through the Berzeviczy's I also descend from several other very large and well-known noble families from Hungary. They're the Bárczay de Bárcza, Merse de Szinye, Soós de Sóvár and Sziny de Teresztén families.

Interestingly enough, the current reigning monarch of England, Queen Elizabeth II, is 1/16 Hungarian! Queen Elizabeth II's 2nd-great-grandmother was Countess Klaudina Zsuzsánna Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde. She was born on 21 Sep 1812 in Erdőszentgyörgy, Transylvania to Count László Rhédey de Rhéde (1773-1835) and Baroness Ágnes Inczédy de Nagy-Várad (1788-1856). On 2 May 1835 in Vienna, Austria, Klaudina was married to Duke Alexander Paul of Württemberg.

All of Klaudina's ancestors are of Hungarian nobility. She descends from many well-to-do and powerful Hungarian families, but the one that interests me the most is the Kapy de Kapivár family.. my family! My common ancestor with the Queen & Klaudina is György Kapy de Kapivár and his wife Klára Bárczay de Bárcza. That would make me 12th cousins, twice removed with Queen Elizabeth II! Not much is listed about György in Iván Nagy's book "Magyarország Családai", other than his father was living in the 1520's and his children were living in the 1530's.
