Obituary #1 of Auguste (Lübke) Martin

Antigo Daily Journal; 20 Oct 1938, page 7
   Mrs. Augusta Martin
Mrs. Augusta Martin, 85, a resident of the town of Polar for the past 50 years, died early last evening at the Memorial hospital, where she has been a patient since last Sunday, when she fell and broke her leg.
Before her marriage Augusta Lubke, Mrs. Martin was born in Germany in 1853 on Nov. 29. She was married in Germany and in 1883 they came to the United States, settling near Beaver Dam. Five years later they came to Langlade county, making their home in the town of Polar, where they have lived since. Mr. Martin died in 1934.
Surviving her are three sons, Otto of the town of Polar; Gustav of the town of Polar; and William, of the town of Polar, with whom she made her home. One daughter, Alvina, Mrs. Henry Kipke of Polar preceded her in death in 1908. A daughter, Anna, passed away in infancy, and a son, Carl, at the age of five.
Mrs. Martin was a member of St. John's Lutheran church of Polar and was an active member of the Ladies' Aid of that church.
Funeral services will be held at 2o'clock Sunday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church with the Rev. H. T. Rasmussen as the officiant. Interment will be in the Polar cemetery. The body will lie in state at the William Martin home in the town of Polar.

My Maternal Lineage: Update 3; Final Update

Two weeks ago I discussed the updates I had found on my direct maternal lineage; you can find the post here. At that point, the following was all I knew on the oldest member of my maternal line:

5. Maria Obergfell

b. unknown

d. unknown

m. Jacob Löhrer; 21 Aug 1660, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Hans Jacob Löhrer, b. 21 Jun 1669, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Hans Georg Löhrer, b. 17 Jan 1678, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Barbara Löhrer, b. 24 Apr 1679, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Anna Maria Löhrer, (above)

As of Tuesday, I've made some new discoveries that will likely be the end of my maternal lineage (with the exception of needing to find the death of Maria Obergfell). The Hornberg Evangelical parish records begin in 1635, so I cannot go any further. I was actually extremely lucky to have found what I was able to on Tuesday. Here are the results of that research:

5. Maria Obergfell

b. 13 Mar 1635 (illegitimate)

d. unknown

m. Jacob Löhrer; 21 Aug 1660, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Hans Jacob Löhrer, b. 21 Jun 1669, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Hans Georg Löhrer, b. 17 Jan 1678, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Barbara Löhrer, b. 24 Apr 1679, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Anna Maria Löhrer, (above)

6. Ursula Joos

b. abt 1609, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

d. 13 Nov 1676, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

m. Erhardt Obergfell; 17 May 1636, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Anna Maria Obergfell, (above) (illegitimate)

*Christina Obergfell, b. 06 Mar 1640, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Jacob Obergfell, b. 14 Mar 1644, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Lucia Obergfell, b. 24 Jun 1646, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Barbara Obergfell, b. 10 Jan 1648, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Anna Obergfell, b. 14 Jan 1650, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Johanna Obergfell, b. 08 Nov 1652, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

*Johannes Obergfell, b. 08 Dec 1655, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

My maternal line ends with an Ursula Joos, according to her age at death born about 1609. According to her marriage record, she was the daughter of Georg Joos. Her husband, Erhadt Obergfell, was the son of an Erhardt Obergfell. They were the only Obergfell noticeably living in the Hornberg parish in the 1630's-1650's.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Heritage Pie Chart

Randy Seaver at Genea-Musings has come up with the following challenge this week:

Your mission tonight, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) List your 16 great-great-grandparents with their birth, death and marriage data (dates and places).
2) Determine the countries (or states) that these ancestors lived in at their birth and at their death.
3) For extra credit, go make a “Heritage Pie” chart for the country of origin (birth place) for these 16 ancestors. [Hint: you could use the chart generator from Kid Zone for this.] [Note: Thank you to Sheri Fenley for the "Heritage Pie" chart idea.]
4) Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a post on Facebook or google+.

Here are the 14 I know (plus the states for the two that I do not know based on the information given by their daughter in the census).

The Second Marriage of Leon Leśniewski

I was recently told about a website which holds some digitized records from the Poznan area of Poland. The website is called "szukaj w archiwach" and you can find it here: http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/ Not everything is digitized yet, but I was fortunate enough to find some records pertaining to my family, the Gotowy's and Leśniewski's.

Although the area is Poland, the records were actually kept in German.. well, these were at least. And if you know me, you know I can read these documents like their English. :-)

New Database: Mecklenburg, Germany, Parish Register Transcripts, 1876-1918

Ancestry added a new database on December 7th entitled "Mecklenburg, Germany, Parish Register Transcripts, 1876-1918".

I was browsing through the images of this database, and this is one great resource that they've put online! It states: "The majority of the records cover the years 1876-1918. However, there are some earlier records, some as early as 1716." These are digital images of the actual records! Let's hope they continue with this and upload more and more records from other parts of Germany, and Europe too!

There's four (4) initial categories to choose from, for the database:

• Evangelical-Lutheran Mecklenburg-Schwerin
• Evangelical-Lutheran Mecklenburg-Strelitz
• Garnisongemeinden (Garrison Communities)
• Catholic

I can offer my assistance with a quick look-up or translation help. Anything after 1/2 hour, I charge at a fair hourly rate. Here's a list of the towns available for each category.
