Surname Saturday #27: Bódogh

The Bódogh family is by far my absolute favorite family I have ever researched, and am continually doing so. I became obsessed with anything to do with the Bódogh family in 2004, when I found within the Borsod county archives' nobility records, copies of nobility records pertaining to the Bódogh family's nobility investigation. It contained 118 documents full of details about the family.. and the best part, hand-drawn pedigrees of the Bódogh family tree! To date (29 Dec 2012), I have 1,607 known descendants of János Bódogh and his wife Anna Péterváradi, the earliest known progenitors of the Bódogh family. Here is my line to them:

*A document dated 05 July 1775 from the Szabolcs county nobility investigation papers, lists a nobleman named "Michaël Tóth" living in Tiszadob. It mentions that his family received nobility from King Rudolf I and that the nobility as well as a genealogy was recorded in Szolnok county. No date of when the nobility was received was given.

*In the publication, "Magyarország vármegyéi és városai", by Sámuel Borovszky, it states the following:
Tóth family, entry 4. Nobility received from King Rudolf. Recorded in Külsõ-Szolnok county. Tóth Mihály a resident of Tiszadob in 1725.

The brothers "Tóth Imre, Benedek, Jakab és Ambrus" received nobility from Rudolf in 1580. It was recorded in Lelesz, by Tóth István, son of Mihály and Tóth Mihály, son of István.

*In the publication, "Siebmacher's Wappenbuch", it gives a full detailed description (in German) of the coat of arms of the Tóth family. The Family of László Szepessy & Terézia Csoma

The Szepessy de Négyes family was the first connection to "large" nobility I had in my family tree. I discovered this cousin line of mine back around 2004 and have been working on it since; filling in the blanks with data that I found here and there. I'm connected to this family through their daughter Malvina, whose second husband was my 4th cousin 5 times removed: Doctor Albert Bódogh of Miskolcz. Here is the information on this family:

László Szepessy de Négyes was born on 17 Jul 1797 in Ládháza, Borsod, Hungary, to László Szepessy de Négyes and Katalin Ragályi de Ragály és Kis-Csoltó. He was one of five children. László was married to Terézia Francziska Klára Csoma de Ragylocz, who was born on 19 May 1809 in Noszvaj, Borsod, Hungary, to Zsigmond Csoma de Ragylocz and Terézia Szilassy de Szilas és Pilis. She was one of four children. László passed away on 27 Jun 1853 in Berente, Borsod, Hungary and Terézia passed away on 04 Jan 1867 in Radván, Zólyom, Hungary. László and Terézia had the following children:

The marriage later ended in divorce and both were remarried. Malvina was remarried to Albert Bódogh, a doctor from Miskolcz. He was born on 10 May 1829 in Nemesbikk, Borsod, Hungary, to Péter Bódogh and Erzsébet Szeghö. He died on 12 Apr 1886 in Miskolcz, Borsod, Hungary. The following are all of Malvina's children:

FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The Birth Record of Katalin Bárczay de Bárcza

Lately, I've been working on a branch of my Bódogh family that I know little about. My line comes from Tiszadob in Szabolcs county. Previous to that, they came from Gelej and before that Tiszaszederkény, both in Borsod County. Back in the mid-late 1600's a branch of my Bódogh's settled in Miskolcz, the largest city in Borsod county. I've been trying to document and connect this branch to the larger Bódogh family tree that I have compiled.

This birth record is for Katalin Bárczay de Bárcza. Although she is a cousin to me in her own right (a 12th cousin 5 times removed, through the Bárczay de Bárcza family), my connection to her is her husband: Géza Demeter de Szeő-Demeter. Géza, an early explorer of Africa, was the son of Ernő Demeter de Szeő-Demeter and Erzsébet Bódogh de Nemesbikk. Nemesbikk is a neighboring village to Gelej and Tiszaszederkény; the Bódogh families of Nemesbikk are already compiled and connected into my large Bódogh family tree.

What's really interesting is the occupation of Katalin's father! An extract of Katalin Bárczay de Bárcza's birth record is as follows:

My Birthday - May 30th

Today is my birthday and I'm now 24! I thought it'd be neat to search my database and see who all was also born on May 30th. Here is what I found:

Acker, Mary Jane:
She was born 30 May 1864 in Pickens County, Alabama to Baylis Grace Acker and Elizabeth Frances Clardy. She was married to my 1st cousin 4 times removed Lewis Banks Rodgers, Sr., on 04 Jan 1883 in Cherokee County, Texas. They had eleven children from 1883 to 1908!

Berzeviczy de Berzevicze, Mária:
She was born on 30 May 1895 in Eperjes, Sáros megye, Hungary. Her father was Elek Berzeviczy de Berzevicze and her mother was Anna Hrabéczy de Vágujhely. Mária is a very distant cousin of mine, and to date I'm related to her three times:
*9th cousin, 3 times removed
*11th cousin, 2 times removed
*12th cousin, 2 times removed

Blum, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1786 in Sulzbach, a tiny community in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Conrad Blum and Anna Maria Lauble. Georg's paternal 3rd-great-grandparents Christian and Magdalena Blum (born in 1590's) are my 10th-great-grandparents. Georg is my 4th cousin, 7 times removed.

Bodogh, Eugene John
Eugene was born 30 May 1912 in Alpha, Warren County, New Jersey. He was born to Kálmán Bódogh and Paulina Szankó. Kálmán was born in Nemesszalók, Veszprém megye, Hungary. This line of Bódogh's were a branch of my cousins who left Miskolc in Borsod megye and resettled in Veszprém megye. The earliest members of this branch that I know of are the two brothers János and István. János was the progenitor of the Veszprém megye branch and he was a reverend. He was born about 1809 and died 05 Dec 1880 in Mihályháza, Veszprém megye, Hungary. István was a land-owner in Felsõ-Iregh, Tolna megye, Hungary. I'm not sure if he had any children or descendants. I believe the two brothers may have been born in Miskolc.

Cielewich, Edmund Edward
Edmund was born 30 May 1899 in Medina, Orleans County, New York. His parents are William P. Cielewich and Anna C. Gottovi. I also descend from the Gottovi family, and Anna is my 2nd cousin, 5 times removed.

Savoy-Carignano, King Amadeus I of Spain
He was born 30 May 1845 to King Victor Emanuele II of Italy and his wife Maria Adelaide Habsburg-Lotharingen. I'm related to King Amadeus I of Spain through countless connections, but our closest link is 15th cousins, 9 times removed through our ancestor Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland. Amadeus's wife was Maria Laetitia Bonaparte, the great-niece of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Erwin, William Armstrong
He was born 30 May 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He was the son of James William Erwin, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Rodgers. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph Rodgers and Elizabeth Donaldson. My 5th-great-grandfather James Rodgers, is the brother of Joseph.

Habsburg, Claudia Felicitas
She was born 30 May 1653 to Ferdinand Charles Habsburg and Anna Medici. She was the wife of Leopold I, King of Hungry and Holy Roman Emperor. Claudia is a prime example of the extent of inbreeding with the royalty of Europe. Her paternal grandfather is the brother of her maternal grandmother. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of her maternal grandfather. Her paternal great-grandparents are the exact same as her maternal great-grandparents. It doesn't help her case that her ancestors married into more Habsburg and Medici lines. Our closest line of connection makes us 11th cousins, 10 times removed.

Kolpack, Herman Gustav
He was born 30 May 1860 in Western Prussia, Germany. He was the son of Christoph Kolpack and Karolina Majewska. Herman Gustav is the grandfather of Milton, the husband of my grandmother's step-sister, Gloria Flemming.

Porkoláb, Erzsébet
She was born 30 May 1835 in Tiszadob, to Lajos Porkoláb and Borbála Szabados. Erzsébet is my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.

Porkoláb, László
He was born 30 May 1855 in Tiszadob, to György Porkoláb and Erzsébet Tamási. I'm related to László through both the Porkoláb and Bódogh families. His paternal grandmother is my 5th great-aunt.

Rodgers, Kenneth Orman
He was born 30 May 1919 in Montgomery County, Mississippi to Norman Lester Rodgers and Myrtle Pearl Bennett. Norman is the brother of my great-grandfather Fred Lamar Rodgers. Myrtle is my 2nd cousin, 4 times removed (twice, as her mother and father were first cousins).

Summ, Conrad
Conrad was born 30 May 1850 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johann Georg Summ and Anna Maria Schondelmaier. They were the owners at one point in time of the house called Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach. The house was passed onto Conrad's brother Jakob and then onto Jakob's daughter Christina. She was the last owner of the house until it became a museum. Conrad is the brother of my 3rd-great-grandfather Johann Georg Summ, who married Maria Blum.

Wöhrle, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1722 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johannes Wöhrle, a bauer in the community Herrenbach, and Maria Breithaupt, my 1st cousin, 10 times removed. Georg was married to Barbara Schüssele, on 25 May 1745 in Gutach. Barbara is my 2nd cousin, 9 times removed.

The Family of László Tóth and his wife Zsuzsánna Bódogh, of Tiszadob

My last blog entry was focused on the family of my 3rd-great-grandparents, Károly Tóth and Mária Tóth. Today I'm going to detail Károly Tóth's parents and siblings.

Károly was the son of László Tóth and his wife, Zsuzsánna Bódogh. Both László and Zsuzsánna were born into noble Hungarian families. I have sourced the Tóth family's nobility back to four brothers on 26 Feb 1580, recorded three years later in Heves county in 1583. The four brothers are Ambruzs, Benedek, Imre and Jakab Tóth. Not much is known about them other than their names at the moment. I have sourced the Bódogh family back to 11 Jan 1611 with two brothers: Mihály and Péter. Them and their descendants were known to have lived in Miskolc and the Borsod county area.

László and Zsuzsánna were married on 15 Jan 1834 in Tiszadob. He was 19 years old and she was 17 years old. The witnesses to their marriage were István Horváth and István Vámos, who were not relatives. Note the word "nemes" before László's name in the marriage record. "Nemes" translates to mean "noble" in English.

Their first child was named Zsuzsánna and she was born the same year her parents were married, on 11 Nov 1834. She was baptized three days later on the 14th. She died two days later on 16 Nov 1834. Here is her baptism record:

Their second child was Károly. He was born on 09 Dec 1835 and baptized two days later on the 11th. You can find the information on him and his family on my previous post here. Here is his baptism record:

Their third and final child was Terézia. She was born on 29 Nov 1838 and was baptized two days later on 01 Dec 1838. Her marriage was mentioned in my previous blog about her brother Károly's family. You can find her marriage record here. Terézia was married to Imre Németh on 09 Jan 1856 in Tiszadob, the same day as her brother's marriage. Terézia and Imre had a total of six children: Terézia (1856), Zsófia (1858), Imre (1861), László (1864), Zsófia (1866) and János (1869). All of their children except one died: Terézia in 1856. The daughter Terézia went on to marry a farmer from Tiszaszederkény named Gergely Kis, on 29 Nov 1876. No baptisms for children are found for them in Tiszadob. Here is Terézia's (the mother) baptism record:

László died on 23 Nov 1870 at the age of 56 years old. On his death record he was listed as a "biró" - a judge. Zsuzsánna died seven years later on 10 Feb 1878, at the age of 62 years old.

*Karolina, 1833
*Irma, 1836

What's Been Going On Lately

I've been doing a lot more Hungarian research lately, in several new towns.  And i've been doing some new nobility research in Zemplén megye as well.  I'm finding that our great-great-grandmother Eszter (Tóth) Gombash's family is much more complex and diverse than I originally thought.

Only a week or two ago, I found the death record for her 2nd great-grandmother, Zsuzsánna (Fekete) Szük.  She died in 1791 at the young age of 38.  What I found in her death record was what I had been hoping for, the mention of 'nemes'.. which of course means 'noble' in Hungarian.  There was another noble Fekete family in the same village, and I have a feeling it might be her nephew's family.  I'm going to have to track this noble Fekete family down.  Just a fun fact; 'Fekete' means 'Black' when translated into English.

As of right now for Eszter (Tóth) Gombash, I have her descending from 6 distinct noble families: Tóth (in 1580), Bódogh (in 1611), Porkoláb (in 1635), Szük (in 1690, possibly previously in 1638), Fekete (unknown date) and Miskolczy (unknown date).

The Miskolczy family comes through Erzsébet Miskolczy.  She was  Eszter (Tóth) Gombash's 3rd great-grandmother.  Erzsébet was born about 1710 and married to András Szük.. they lived in Taktaszada.  There was a very well-to-do land owning Miskolczy family in the neighboring town Mád.  A Péter Miskolczy held possessions in Mád from at least 1670 to 1689.  I believe him to be Erzsébet's grandfather.  This Miskolczy family that resided in Mád was the korponai Miskolczy family, or otherwise known as Miskolczy de Korpona.  This family was a branch of the pávai Miskolczy family (Miskolczy de Páva).  This was a Transylvanian family.  Their coat of arms was recorded in Count Teleki's family archives in Marosvásárhely, Transylvania.  I have ordered the receords for this coat of arms; they should be arriving at my local FHC any day now.  Hopefully there will be some kind of nobility information along with the coat of arms.

I'll have more to write in the next few days.

Tiszadob, Hungary: Eszter Tóth's Ancestry & Family; March 08, 2008

It's been a while since I last wrote, so I decided to write a new entry.  I've done an extensive amount of research in the Tiszadob church parish registers.  In my first entry I mentioned how I had 1,255 individuals from Tiszadob in my database.  After just under a month's worth of research, I now have 1,602.. that's 347 new individuals!

I've also received an email from a wonderful woman named Linda (Toki) Walters, who is a distant relative of ours through the Bódogh family.  Her contacting me with information has added a whole new line of descendancy information to the family tree!

I've recently been thinking about adding a section to the website devoted to the nobility of Tiszadob, which involves our family.. and those that tie into our family.  Of the 1,602 individuals in my database, 699 of them are of noble birth.. so far.  I'm sure I've skipped a few that I need to find.  They're mostly from these families:

Balogh

Dancs

Péchy

Tóth

Baráth

Jánossy

Porkoláb

Zákány

Bódogh

Lakatos

Szük

.

My First Entry; February 13, 2008

This is the first entry in my new genealogy blog I've recently decided to write. In this blog I'll discuss things I come across during my research, like websites, databases, people connected to the family tree.. just things that I find useful in my daily scouring of the internet and of records.

In my first blog I wanted to discuss my family tree and the immense amount of information in my database. As of right now, writing this blog, I have 49,943 individuals in my database. I want to explain who all of these people are. In my database I of course have my direct lineage for all of my ancestors.. but I also like to research the families and descendants of the siblings of my ancestors. This is where a big portion of the individuals come from.

The major portion of my database comes from the extensive amount of information on noble and royal families. I am descended from nobility on my father's side (which you will read below) and royalty on my mother's side. I have a love and an obsession for all things to do with nobility (mostly Hungarian), royalty and monarchies in Europe, so I naturally have nearly every single King or Queen of every country of Europe in my database. As of my information right now, I currently descend from 234 Kings or Queens of Europe.. they're from Armenia, Bohemia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Serbia, Spain and Sweden. So naturally, this makes me related to every single European monarch or royal family.

My Father's side:
The ethnicities of my father's side is comprised of Hungarian and Polish.

From the oldest-known progenitor of the Gombash line, a György Gombás who was born in the 1690's, I have a total of 294 descendants. I also have 197 individuals from Büdszentmihály, the village Alex Gombash came from.

The other branch is Eszter Tóth, Alex Gombash's wife. The oldest-known progenitor of the Tóth line, a Mihály Tóth who was alive during the early to mid-1700's, currently has a total of 355 descendants. I also have 1,255 individuals from Tiszadob, the village Eszter Tóth came from.

I have lacked on the research in Büdszentmihály, but I have done extensive research in Tiszadob. This is because Eszter Tóth comes from an extremely noble background; each of her four grandparents were of noble birth. There were two Tóth families, the Bódogh family and the Szük family.

There is a family story or legend that says one of our families was descended from a King from around 1500, and the earlier surname of the family as 'Matis'. We have a distant cousin of ours who lives in Ohio; we're related to her through the Bódogh and Tóth families. Her family also has a family story or legend, and it says that a prince had married a gypsy and he therefore lost all inheritance rights (what a love story, ya?!). If you know anything about either of these stories, or know who might, please contact me.

Tóth is the single most common surname in Hungary, and it means 'Slovak' (the ethnicity).

The Bódogh's were granted a patent of nobility and a coat of arms in 1611 by King Matthias II. The Bódogh name means 'happy'. I currently have 1,370 descendants of the Bódogh family and 374 individuals that carry the surname. This family is the main focus of all my research.

The Szük's were granted a patent of nobility and a coat of arms in 1636 by King Ferdinand II. The Szük name means 'narrow' or 'thin'.

My Mother's side:
As proud as I am of my heritage on my father's side, I am by far more proud of my heritage on my mother's side. The ethnicities of my mother's side is comprised of Bohemian, English, German, Irish, Native American, Scottish and Welsh. Her family consists of individuals involved in the Civil War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, WWI and WWII. It has deeply rooted Native American ancestry connected to the beginning of the United States and Jamestown, royalty from all over Europe, and vast land owners in Germany.

The Rodgers family has been in America since the early 1700's. The oldest-known progenitor is a James Rodgers, who died around 1760 in Virginia. I currently have 1,953 descendants for him in my database, and 552 of them bearing the Rodgers surname.

The Stuempges have an interesting quirk from their early beginning. The oldest-known Stuempges progenitor is a Vit Stümpges, who lived from 1545 to 1592. It is through his granddaughter Giertgen Stümpges (1617-after 1693) that the Stuempges carry their surname. She was married to a Thönis am Bleeckkamp and they had 9 children. Their children carried the Stümpges surname.. their mother's name.. not their father's.

The one last main portion of my research is the Summ/Blum family, from Gutach, Germany. I have many lines dating back to the early, mid or late 1500's. I currently have 928 individuals from Gutach. Our ancestor John George Summ who married Maria Blum, came from a family that owned a house called 'Vogtsbauernhof' in Gutach. This house is currently the main focus point of a large museum in Gutach.
