FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1908 Marriage of József Majoros & Anna Tóth in Ó-Fehértó

While doing some work on my Gombash line today, I was looking at the spouses of my great-grandfather's siblings; one of them being Michael Mayors. I know he was married to my great-grandfather's sister, Julia, on 09 Sep 1939 in Guernsey county, Ohio. Thanks to their marriage record, I knew Michael's exact birth date and the name of his parents: 18 Jun 1912 and Joseph Mayors (Majoros) & Anna Toth. Using that information, I tracked down their passenger manifest records via Ellis Island and located where they originally came from in Hungary: Ó-Fehértó, Szabolcs, Hungary. Below is the marriage record for Michael's parents:

Surname Saturday #28: Szük

I've been interested in this family for quite some time now, mainly because of how rare and unique the surname is. I love when I'm working with a rare and uncommon surname in Hungary, it makes the records for that family "pop" out, and it makes the research just that much more exciting. Surname Saturday #27: Bódogh

The Bódogh family is by far my absolute favorite family I have ever researched, and am continually doing so. I became obsessed with anything to do with the Bódogh family in 2004, when I found within the Borsod county archives' nobility records, copies of nobility records pertaining to the Bódogh family's nobility investigation. It contained 118 documents full of details about the family.. and the best part, hand-drawn pedigrees of the Bódogh family tree! To date (29 Dec 2012), I have 1,607 known descendants of János Bódogh and his wife Anna Péterváradi, the earliest known progenitors of the Bódogh family. Here is my line to them:

Genealogy Time Machine

If you're like myself, you're constantly wishing you could speak to a long-deceased ancestor. Even just for a minute or two. This happened to me tonight and it got me to thinking.. why not blog about it? So here are my absolute top three choices of who, when, where and why I would go back in time.

#1
Who: My 2nd-great-grandmother, Eszter Tóth Gombás
When: October 1909
Where: Ellis Island
Why: According to family stories, she brought along with her while immigrating from Hungary to America, documents on her noble heritage and family tree. Within these documents was information detailing a family connection to a king from about 600 years ago. I know much of her ancestry, but I would do anything to know what details she knew on her noble Hungarian heritage.

#2
Who: Hiram Howell
When: 1853
Where: Tippah County, Mississippi
Why: I want to know all the details of his murder! Why did his son-in-law, Lindsey Slaughter, shoot and kill him? And why wasn't he convicted of murder?

#3
Who: My 3rd-great-grandmother, Ellen Hovis Martin
When: Late 1830's
Where: Lincoln County, North Carolina
Why: She was an illegitimate daughter of first cousins. She lived in a house with her mother and two other illegitimate children, on land that her paternal grandfather had specifically given to her mother.. to provide for her. Ellen's biological father died when she was only 5 years old. It would be amazing to peak into the life of Ellen in her pre-teen years, to see what kind of hardships she was going through and what life was like for her, her mother and her siblings.

I would love to hear your top three choices! Share them in the comments or post the link from the blog post!

FamilySearch Find of the Day: My Long-Lost Aunt

A few weeks ago, I was doing some indexing and arbitrating for the Hungarian civil registration records on FamilySearch Indexing. To my surprise, it was my great-grandfather's town of Büdszentmihály, in Szabolcs county! Within the first few batches, I came upon a birth record for a Gombás child. I immediately saw the father's name was Gombás Sándor (the name of my 2nd-great-grandfather), but kind of pushed it off the burner thinking I had all the children for my 2nd-great-grandparents. But then I saw the house number Sándor was living in; it was the house number MY Sándor had grew up and lived in! I went down and looked at the mother's name, and there she was.. my 2nd-great-grandmother, Tóth Eszter. I was blown away that I had found a sibling to my great-grandfather that I hadn't known about. I stopped indexing and analyzed the whole record, extracted the information and went and saved the actual image off FamilySearch. To my delight, the record gave mention of the child's date of death and the record number! The two records below are the child's birth record and death record, respectively.

Surname Saturday #1: Gombash

Long have I put off beginning this weekly genealogical meme, but it's about time I started! Before I begin with the actual data, I wanted to talk a bit about the history of my surname and some DNA information.

My surname Gombash was originally Gombás, in Hungary. After coming to America, my 2nd-great-grandparents changed the spelling to aid in the pronunciation of the name. Gombás is a form of the Hungarian word "gomba", which means "fungus" or "mushroom". The term "gombás" implies the original fore-bearer of the surname was associated with mushrooms; either foraging for, growing and/or selling them.

I had my Y-DNA tested twice now; once a few years ago and a second time through a generous friend of mine. All results have come back to conclude that my direct Gombash line belongs to the haplogroup I2a2a, on the human family tree. It appears that our Gombash ancestors seems to have migrated to Hungary hundreds of years ago from the Bosnia-Croatia area.

FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The Birth Record of Alex Gombash in 1896

I was delighted the other day, to see that FamilySearch had updated the Hungary Civil Registrations database. The new update added records for the towns of Szentmihály and Tiszadob.. the two towns my great-great-grandparents came from! The civil registration records for these towns weren't previously available on microfilm, so I was instantly excited! I knew I would finally be able to find the birth record of my great-grandfather, Alex Gombash. Here is an extracted copy:

If I Could Speak To My Ancestors...

Earlier today, I was analyzing all the information in my family tree (no surprise there!). I was looking at my dead-ends and trying to figure out which records I needed to persue to crack the brick-walls. I then, again, began to dream and wish that I had some way to communicate with my ancestors and ask them questions. Thinking about it all more and more, I thought if it WERE a possibility, what three questions would I ask to any of my ancestors?

Rules:
1. You may ask any three questions to any ancestors from any period in time.
2. Not all questions have to be directed to one specific ancestor, you can have a single question for three different ancestors.
3. You can't repeat a question, they have to be three unique questions. Asking three different ancestors what their mother's surname was is far too easy!
4. Before each question, you must identify which ancestor you're asking the question to.
5. After identifying the answer and the question, give a little information about this ancestor that's related to your question. You never know who will stumble upon this information and contact you!

My Three Questions:
#1 Ancestor: Hiram Howell (b. about 1790, SC; d. 1853, Tippah Co, MS)
#1 Question: What complications lead to your murder?
Fact: Hiram Howell was murdered in 1853 (exact date unknown) by Lindsey Slaughter, his probable son-in-law. I believe that Lindsey Slaughter's wife, Bathsheba, is the daughter of Hiram Howell. Lindsey and Bathsheba Slaughter had a daughter named Temperance, a name extremely unique to the Howell family (the name of Hiram's daughter whom I descend from, and the name of Hiram's sister-in-law).

#2 Ancestor: Eszter Tóth (b. 1874, Tiszadob, Hungary; d. 1950, Lore City, OH)
#2 Question: What was the family information in the paperwork that you brought with you, when you immigrated to America?
Fact: Family stories from cousins all recollect that my great-great-grandmother had brought with her when she immigrated, papers about her family tree and ancestors. My cousin in Arizona (whom inherited the papers, yet won't share a single piece of information) has stated she DOES have these papers and it has a full family tree and also includes information about a King that we supposedly descend from. Hearing of this claim years ago, I knew it was at least more plausible than family stories of others.. Eszter was of nobility! A noblewoman is more likely to descend from a King than a peasant. Just in the past two years, I have researched enough to the point that I have proven that we DO descend from a King of Hungary. To be precise, we descend from the early "true" Magyar Kings of Hungary from the Árpád Dynasty. I just want those documents my great-great-grandma brought over from Hungary!!

#3 Ancestor: Martha A. Miller (b. 1836, AL?; d. 1877, Holmes or Yazoo Co, MS)
#3 Question: Who are your parents?!
Fact: According to a family bible (that no one seems to know where it is, or who had it), Martha A. Miller was born on 18 Nov 1836, married to James Andrew J. Costilow on 25 Jul 1855 and died 19 Dec 1877. No places for any of these dates were provided in this supposed family bible. There have also been claims that Martha has Native American roots. Martha truly is a brick-wall. I haven't been able to locate her in the 1850 census anywhere. Any possible matches have been disproven, so I always end up right at the brick-wall again.

What are your questions? :)

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - the 1940 US Census

This is going to be a fun post. I saw on a website, that the 1940 census will be open to the public as of yesterday, one year from now. Immediately, I began thinking of who I should find first.

I've already been able to find my maternal grandparents. My grandfather, Thomas Thurman Rodgers, was born in Duck Hill, Montgomery County, Mississippi on 15 Jun 1928 to Fred Lamar Rodgers and Ellen Inez Martin. Here is an excerpt of him with his family in the 1930 census:

Rodgers, Fred L., Head, 30, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi, Farmer
Rodgers, Ellen I., Wife, 27, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi, Farm laborer
Rodgers, M. J., Son, 11, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Virginia A., Daughter, 6, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Wilburn H., Son, 4 8/12, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi
Rodgers, Thomas T., Son, 16/12, Mississippi, Mississippi, Mississippi

My maternal grandmother was Elaine Florella Stuempges. She was born 31 Dec 1926 in Polar, Langlade County, Wisconsin, to Walter John Stuempges and Sylvia Maria Martin. Here is an excerpt of her with her family in the 1930 census:

Stuempges, Walter, Head, 30, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Bohemia, Mechanic in Garage
Stuempges, Sylvia, Wife, 20, Wisconsin, Germany, Wisconsin
Stuempges, Elaine, Daughter, 3, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin
Stuempges, Eunice, Daughter, 1, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin

As for my paternal grandparents, they were born after the 1930 census. My grandfather was John Edward Gombash. He was born 02 Oct 1935 in Caretta, McDowell County, West Virginia and was the son of Alex Gombash (previously Sándor Gombás) and Catherine Grządziel. Along with my great-grandparents and my grandfather, there will be 6 other children listed.. siblings to my grandfather. They're all living, so I won't state names and dates out of respect for their privacy.

My paternal grandmother was Mary Louise Adas. She was born 02 Mar 1940 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to Edward Robert Adas, Sr. and his wife Martha Violet Czarny. Now knowing she was born in 1940, I'm REALLY hoping she's listed in the census. I'm not sure of the months of which the census was take that year, so I'll have to do some research on that topic. She had one younger brother who was born in 1941.

I'm going to be really curious about my paternal great-great-grandmother, as well. She was Eszter (Tóth) Gombás. Her husband, my great-great-grandfather, had died in May of 1931. She will have been a widow for 9 years now. I'm not sure of the exact location of where she will be, but I believe she may be in Lore City, Richland Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. That's where her daughter Julia (Gombash) Mayors was hopefully living at the time. I do know that Eszter died in April of 1950 in Lore City. Maybe she'll even appear in the 1950 census, too! Boy am I impatient! :)

My noble Tóth family of Tiszadob, Hungary

My Tóth family's nobility is old, and the family is very distinct. They were given their nobility in 1580 by King Rudolf I of Hungary, also Holy Roman Emperor and was from the house of Habsburg. It was granted to four (4) brothers: Imre (Emerich), Benedek (Benedict), Jakab (Jacob) and Ambrúzs (Ambrose). You can see my previous blog entry HERE containing their patent of nobility.

Currently, the only know line of Tóth's to be descendants of these four brothers, resided in Tiszadob, in Szabolcs megye, Hungary. They were living in Tiszadob as early as 1725, and sometime prior to that they were from the Külsõ-Szolnok megye area (now known as the Heves megye area). It's to the south-west of Tiszadob, and not all entirely that far.

The family began small, with a single known progenitor in 1725 being a Mihály Tóth. Through my research, he has two known sons:
*István Tóth (abt1709-1786)
*Mihály Tóth (abt1716-1794).

István's wife, known from death/burial records from Tiszadob, is an Erzsébet Csetneki (abt1721-1789). Csetneki is not a known family to have lived in Tiszadob around the time they would have married, so I've made the assumption that Erzsébet must have been from a neighboring village. Mihály's wife is unknown.

According to a 1750 document about the family, which can be found in the Lelesz convent archives in the old Zemplén county, it gives this very small and brief explanation of the family: "Tóth István, Mihály fia, és Mihály, István fia". This essentially means that István had a son named Mihály, and Mihály had a son named István. This helps.. a lot!

My direct paternal line of descent for my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth, ends with two Mihály Tóth's. They also used the additional name of Boros, to help distinguish them from other noble and non-noble Mihály Tóth's in the town. They would appear as "Boros Tóth Mihály". The eldest died in 1818 at the age of 66, estimated birth would be abt 1752. He fits perfectly to be the son of the above mentioned István, who had a son Mihály.. although he was allegedly born two years after the document was created. This is a problem. After conducting my Tiszadob researching (and I'm STILL conducting research in Tiszadob), I've come to the conclusion that my Mihály is either a namesake for his elder sibling that died young.. or his estimated age is an error on his death record. Around the time he died, Tiszadob was notorious with giving incorrect ages on marriage records.. so why couldn't that be the case for deaths as well? I believe that's the case.

The direct maternal line of descent of my g-g-grandmother Eszter Tóth is also a noble Tóth line from Tiszadob. Yes, her father and mother were cousins.. 4th cousins. As you're guessing, Eszter.. through her mother.. descends from Mihály, who had a son named István. István was born about 1736 and died 1798. He was married to an Erzsébet Porkoláb, another noble family from Tiszadob. She was born about 1741 and died in 1788. Through them, I descend from another Mihály born around the same time as Mihály Boros "Jr". I can safely assume that this line of descent is correct, since Mihály Boros "Sr" wouldn't have had two sons with the first name Mihály. This wasn't the von Reuss family of Germany, who named all their male children Heinrich in honor of Heinrich VI, Holy Roman Emperor... yes, every single one of them. Talk about a boring and probably difficult family tree. haha

I haven't found any other mentions of a Tóth family in Hungary descending from these four original brothers, other than my Tiszadob Tóth's. If you believe you may descend from these four brothers, please contact me with your research!

The Gombash's Very Distant Spanish Ancestry

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you know very well that my family, the Gombash's, are of Hungarian descent. Through-out my research I find new documents and records that shed light on the diversity of my Hungarian heritage. Through our Hungarian ancestry we're also Slavic, Swedish and Transylvanian. Now with some new research on our noble origins, I'm discovering that we're very distantly Spanish.

Through Eszter Tóth, we descend from the old and now extinct Nagy-Martoni family. The Nagy-Martoni began in Hungary with three brothers Bertram, Simon, Michael and their sister Tota. In 1198, the four siblings left their home of Aragón in Spain to accompany Constance, who was bethrothed to King Imre of Hungary. Much was recorded about the Nagy-Martoni family as several members of the family became quite powerful and well-to-do.

Modern location of Aragón in Spain

I was able to find an English source that wrote about the family: [At the court there were people who understood Provençal, because Constance had brought some families from Iberia with her. The most famous were the three brothers, Bertram, Simon and Michael, who freed Mallorca and Minorca from the Saracens, and had to leave Southern Spain because of the Almohadian invasions. They fought against the heathen in Hungary too. In 1241 "Simon Hispanus" and Bertram played a decisive role in the successful defence of the Hungarian capital city of Esztergom against the Tartars. In 1204 the Hungarian King gave a village to the sister of the three knights, a "beautiful" Tota and the Spanish family received its Hungarian name from that village. Later they were known as the counts Nagy-Martoni/or the Fraknói or the Bajóti family.] (1).

Seal of Simon Nagy-Martoni's son Pál

There was another additional English source that described in more detail the sister Tota: [Constance brought with her a girl called Tota, the sister of Count Simon and Count Bertram. She was exceedingly beautiful, so fair, indeed, that scarcely any woman in the world in those days was considered her like. This girl was given in marriage to Duke Benedict, son of Conrad, and her dowry was the town of Martinsdorf, a gift from King Emeric and Queen Constance.] (2).

Interestingly enough, I descend from King Imre's sister Margit through my mother's family.

The Family of László Tóth and his wife Zsuzsánna Bódogh, of Tiszadob

My last blog entry was focused on the family of my 3rd-great-grandparents, Károly Tóth and Mária Tóth. Today I'm going to detail Károly Tóth's parents and siblings.

Károly was the son of László Tóth and his wife, Zsuzsánna Bódogh. Both László and Zsuzsánna were born into noble Hungarian families. I have sourced the Tóth family's nobility back to four brothers on 26 Feb 1580, recorded three years later in Heves county in 1583. The four brothers are Ambruzs, Benedek, Imre and Jakab Tóth. Not much is known about them other than their names at the moment. I have sourced the Bódogh family back to 11 Jan 1611 with two brothers: Mihály and Péter. Them and their descendants were known to have lived in Miskolc and the Borsod county area.

László and Zsuzsánna were married on 15 Jan 1834 in Tiszadob. He was 19 years old and she was 17 years old. The witnesses to their marriage were István Horváth and István Vámos, who were not relatives. Note the word "nemes" before László's name in the marriage record. "Nemes" translates to mean "noble" in English.

Their first child was named Zsuzsánna and she was born the same year her parents were married, on 11 Nov 1834. She was baptized three days later on the 14th. She died two days later on 16 Nov 1834. Here is her baptism record:

Their second child was Károly. He was born on 09 Dec 1835 and baptized two days later on the 11th. You can find the information on him and his family on my previous post here. Here is his baptism record:

Their third and final child was Terézia. She was born on 29 Nov 1838 and was baptized two days later on 01 Dec 1838. Her marriage was mentioned in my previous blog about her brother Károly's family. You can find her marriage record here. Terézia was married to Imre Németh on 09 Jan 1856 in Tiszadob, the same day as her brother's marriage. Terézia and Imre had a total of six children: Terézia (1856), Zsófia (1858), Imre (1861), László (1864), Zsófia (1866) and János (1869). All of their children except one died: Terézia in 1856. The daughter Terézia went on to marry a farmer from Tiszaszederkény named Gergely Kis, on 29 Nov 1876. No baptisms for children are found for them in Tiszadob. Here is Terézia's (the mother) baptism record:

László died on 23 Nov 1870 at the age of 56 years old. On his death record he was listed as a "biró" - a judge. Zsuzsánna died seven years later on 10 Feb 1878, at the age of 62 years old.

The Family of Károly Tóth and his wife Mária Tóth, of Tiszadob

Two weeks ago, I posted an entry about the first Hungarian document I found. That document is what began my entire search on my Hungarian ancestors. I thought it'd would be neat to show my documented work for a single family for each blog entry.

This entry will be focused on my great-great-grandmother's family. Her name was Eszter Tóth, and she was the daughter of Károly Tóth and Mária Tóth (who were 4th cousins). Károly and Mária were married on 09 Jan 1856 in Tiszadob, entry number 5. Károly was 20 years old and Mária was 19, both were from Tiszadob and were listed as földmives - farmers. Fortunately for me, the sister of Károly was married on the same day. Her name was Terézia Tóth and she was married to an Imre Németh. She was 17 and he was 26. Terézia was a földmives, like her brother Károly, and Imre was a mólnár - a miller. Here is their marriage record:

Their first child was named Károly. He was born 22 Nov 1856 and baptized a day later on the 23rd, both in Tiszadob. In his baptism record he is listed as "elsö-születt", which means "first-born". Károly only lived to be 10 years old. He died on 04 Jun 1867 in Tiszadob. The circumstances are quite sad for the death of Károly. According to his death record, he fell into some kind of pit or hole in the ground in the neighboring town of Szerencs, and drowned. Looking more into his death, it seems very odd. Szerencs is about 17 miles north of Tiszadob (where they were living) and would have been a good 5 hour walk. What was little 10-year-old Károly doing in Szerencs? Here is his baptism record:

Their second child was named Lajos. He was born 17 Oct 1860 and was baptized three days later on the 20th. I can only presume that Lajos lived to an old age, as he was married and had children. He was married to Borbála Balogh on 14 Sep 1884 in Tiszadob and had four children that I know of: Lenke (1886), Terézia (1888), Borbála (1891) and Lajos (1894). The record available to me end in 1895, so it's entirely possible that Lajos and Borbála had several more children. Here is his baptism record:

Their third child was László, a name-sake for his paternal grandfather. He was born on 01 Mar 1863 and was baptized two days later on the 3rd. László only lived to be two years old. He died on 25 Sep 1865 of "red smallpox". Here is his baptism record:

Their fourth child was Zsuzsánna. She was born on 04 Oct 1865 and was baptized a day later on the 5th. Zsuzsánna had two spouses and seven known children. Her first husband was László Porkoláb and they were married on 16 May 1883 in Tiszadob. They were divorced within a matter of two years, as László remarried in 1885 in the neighboring town of Tiszadada. He was divorced again and married four years later in Tiszadob. I feel bad for the women who had to deal with him, he must've been a real jerk. Anyway, Zsuzsánna was remarried to a man named Dániel Szuhai on 31 Dec 1888 in Tiszadob. It was with Dániel that Zsuzsánna had her children: Dávid (1889), Dávid (1891), András (1892), Bénjámin (1896), Dániel (abt 1905), Pearl (1908) and Samuel (abt 1909). It is to Dániel and Zsuzsánna that my great-great-grandparents (Sándor Gombás and Eszter Tóth) immigrated to when they came to America in 1909. Zsuzsánna died on 16 Nov 1937, in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Her and her husband are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Painesville, Ohio. They have many descendants still living today. Here is her baptism record:

Their fifth child was Mária. She was born 03 Oct 1871 and was baptized two days later on the 5th. Mária was married to Bálint Balogh on 29 Dec 1890. Bálint was the brother of Borbála Balogh, wife of Mária's brother Lajos. Mária and Bálint had a set of twin sons in 1891 named Máté and Bálint. As I stated before, the records available end in 1895, so they could have had more children that we don't know about yet. Here is her baptism record:

Their sixth and last child was Eszter, my great-great-grandmother. She was born on 22 Sep 1874 and was baptized two days later on the 24th. On 13 Mar 1895 in Tiszadob, she was married to Sándor Gombás from the neighboring village called Büdszentmihály. Sándor came to America in 1902. Eszter followed suit and came a year later in 1903. While during her stay she had two children, Susan (1904) and Gyula (1906). She returned to Hungary with her daughter Susan and then finally came to America for good with her children in 1909. Sándor and Eszter had a total of eleven children: Alex (1896), Sándor? (1897), Balázs/Robert (1898), József (1900), Susan (1904), Gyula/Julius (1906), Esther (1910), Sophie (1912), Elizabeth "Betty" (1913), Dallas "Casey" (1916) and Julia (1920). Sándor died on 02 May 1931 in Goff, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Eszter died on 04 Apr 1950 in Richland Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. They're both buried in the "Old Anadale" Eau Claire Cemetery, in Venango, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Here is her baptism record:
