FamilySearch Find Of The Day: The 1908 Marriage of József Majoros & Anna Tóth in Ó-Fehértó

While doing some work on my Gombash line today, I was looking at the spouses of my great-grandfather's siblings; one of them being Michael Mayors. I know he was married to my great-grandfather's sister, Julia, on 09 Sep 1939 in Guernsey county, Ohio. Thanks to their marriage record, I knew Michael's exact birth date and the name of his parents: 18 Jun 1912 and Joseph Mayors (Majoros) & Anna Toth. Using that information, I tracked down their passenger manifest records via Ellis Island and located where they originally came from in Hungary: Ó-Fehértó, Szabolcs, Hungary. Below is the marriage record for Michael's parents:

Hungarian Genealogy

I've been considering the idea of a new website lately. It would be devoted strictly to Hungarian genealogy, and it's goal would be to help others find their Hungarian ancestors.

I'll be creating a surname database where others could register their surnames and localities, in hopes of connecting with others. With the help of a friend, I'll also be creating a forum where researchers can discuss whichever genealogy or research topic they wish.

Now the main objective of the new website will be the sharing and exchanging of records and documents. Any kind of records related to genealogy would be welcome and encouraged. I personally have already created several useful databases that i'll include in this new website. The most important of these databases, a major project that I have undertaken, is the Hungarian Marriage Project. My plan is indexing the marriage records from pre-WWI and including them in a database. I'm hoping to eventually have help down the line, as well. I already have records from four parishes, soon to be five and with an estimated total near 5,300 marriages.

I have't made a final decision on a name for the website yet, but I have begun designing it already. Let's hope it's ready with-in a week! Watch for my next blog for the update on the website name and address.

Taktaszada Parish Records

Much of you know that about two years ago I undertook a massive transcribing project for Tiszadob. It's not complete and I've directed my attention to a new target: Taktaszada.

The Taktaszada parish records began much earlier than Tiszadob (which began in 1786). Their record keeping began in 1755 with baptisms. It wasn't until 1733 that the death/burial and marriages finally began to be recorded as well. It's a shame they didn't begin in 1755 as well, but that's the luck of the genealogist.

To date, I have the marriage records are complete. They cover the years 1733-1895. Although I did originally begin the death/burial records next, I thought it a much better idea to begin the baptism instead. The baptism is a much more higher priority to researchers. As of right now, I have 1755-1793 complete. I have 102 more years to complete.

I've been researching in Hungarian parish records for nearly 10 years now. It still astounds me that the extensive amount families never really moved or left their hometown. People from Tiszadob stayed in Tiszadob.. people from Taktaszada stayed in Taktaszada. Only sometimes they would marry into a neighboring village's family. So because of this, it's not uncommon to be related to most (if not all) of the residents of the village at the time. It's nothing about cousins marrying cousins, but it definitely reminds me of the deep south families of America. The families of a town were so closely connected. We all are truly related to everyone. :)

Tiszadob, Hungary: Marriage & Census Records; March 31, 2008

I recently decided to gather and put together records to aid in my genealogy research of Tiszadob.  I was contemplating a book, but I later decided a website would be much easier to do.  It'd be more easily available to others also researching in Tiszadob.

I so far have all the marriages of Tiszadob indexed.. that's years 1786 to 1895.  The records began in 1786, go to 1895 and then civil registration began in Hungary in 1896.

I have also added census records for the years 1714, 1715, 1744, 1746, 1828 and 1832.
