Surname Saturday #26: Blum

The Blum family is probably one of my most researched and most known about lines in my ancestry. I've loved researching this line. Being the total genealogy addict that I am, I have actually researched this line twice. I love this family, this parish and the general area. I can't wait to visit there one day!

My Maternal Lineage: Update 2

It's been a year exactly since my last update on my direct-maternal lineage. I've found out a lot since then, and actually a lot just last night. One interesting thing I found out over the year, is that my MTDNA belongs to Haplogroup K. That means I share MTDNA with Ötzi, the famous ice-man whose remains were found on the Ötztal Alps just inside the Italian border.

Now for the data. The last I knew a year ago, was my dead-end ancestor Catharina Beilharz and her mother Barbara Winkler. Here is an update on all the new data I've found:

1. Catharina Beilharz
b. 16 Jan 1761, Hohenweg, Hornberg, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
d. 30 Oct 1818, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
m1. Christian Brohammer; 26 Sep 1787, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
m2. Georg Breithaupt; 27 Sep 1807, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
*Barbara Brohammer, b. 24 Sep 1788, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
*Conrad Brohammer, b. 01 Jul 1790, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
*Maria Brohammer, b. 08 Nov 1793, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany

2. Barbara Winkler
b. 20 Mar 1736, Gutach, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
d. bef. 30 Oct 1818, Hohenweg, Hornberg, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
m1. Johann Blum; not married-illegitimate child
m2. Johann Jacob Beilharz; 04 Sep 1758, Gutach, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Catharina Beilharz, (above)
*(need to check for further children!)

3. Catharina Aberle
b. 05 Dec 1701, Schenkenbach, Hornberg, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
d. unknown
m. Conrad Winkler; 16 Nov 1723; Hornberg, Ortenau Kreis, Baden, Germany
*Christina Winkler, b. 24 Dec 1724, Gutach, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Lucia Winkler, b. 12 Aug 1727, Gutach, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Anna Winkler, b. 29 Jul 1728, Gutach, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Susanna Winkler, b. 24 Sep 1731, Gutach, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Barbara Winkler, (above)

4. Anna Maria Löhrer (also spelled as Lehrer)
b. 12 Dec 1684,  Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
d. unknown
m. Jacob Aberle; 14 Feb 1699, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Maria Aberle, b. 14 Jul 1700,  Schenkenbach, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Catharina Aberle, (above)
*Lucia Aberle, b. 04 May 1705,  Schenkenbach, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Christina, b. 17 Apr 1708,  Schenkenbach, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany

5. Maria Obergfell
b. unknown
d. unknown
m. Jacob Löhrer; 21 Aug 1660, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Hans Jacob Löhrer, b. 21 Jun 1669, Schondel, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Hans Georg Löhrer, b. 17 Jan 1678, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Barbara Löhrer, b. 24 Apr 1679, Hornberg, Ortenau, Baden, Germany
*Anna Maria Löhrer, (above)

There are at least 25 more years of church records available, prior to Maria Obergfell's marriage (in 1660) so I'm fairly certain I'll be able to find her baptism record. If I'm lucky, I might even find the marriage for her parents which would include HER mother's maiden name! That unfortunately would be the absolute dead-end on my maternal line. Let's cross our fingers and hope for good things! And a fun new interesting name for the final surname of my direct maternal line!

I have a lot more research to perform on this line of the family, but that's time permitting and when I actually order the Kirnbach Evangelical microfilmed records via the LDS. Any relatives care to help contribute to these costs? I could go back probably another 100 years or so. :)

A New Generation Added To My MT-DNA Line!

A few weeks ago, I learned of the new price increase for the microfilm rentals through FamilySearch. Nudged by this recent hike in prices, I thought it'd be a good idea to order some records for my own family, which I have been neglecting for a very long time. So, I went and ordered six microfilms for myself (a total splurge.. I know.. haha) before the new prices were installed. And I'm so glad that I did. I have been putting off further research into my European family for quite a while now; the main reason being work. When I'm at my local FHC, i'm working on research for clients and not my own. My FHC is open only a limited amount of hours a week, so it doesn't leave much time for my own personal research.

I've had a week of being able to perform research on my OWN family in microfilm for the first time in a long while, since I'm waiting on a huge box-full of microfilms to arrive, for clientele research. I've found a wealth of information on parts of my German and Polish lines so far this week, including a whole new generation on my direct maternal line.. the line that contains my MT-DNA! Thanks to a good friend of mine, I was able to have my Y-DNA and MT-DNA tested recently. When the results came in for my MT-DNA, I became more and more curious about my direct maternal line ancestors; I knew there was more to find and records to go through, but I had been too busy to research into it farther. Until now!

What I knew before I started my research this week was pretty vague: My 6th-great-grandmother on my direct maternal line was Catharina Beilharz, born 16 Jan 1761 in Hohenweg, to Johann Jacob Beilharz, a day-laborer in Hohenweg, and Barbara Winkler. That's all I knew.

A little bit of information about Hohenweg before we go further. Up until 1908, Hohenweg had belonged to the Evangelical parish of Hornberg. It now belongs to Gutach, where Catharina Beilharz was married to Christian Brohammer, in 1787. And where all of their descendants were born, married and died up until the late 19th century when mass emigration was affecting the world.

Okay, back to Catharina Beilharz. From her marriage record to Christian Brohammer, I knew her date and place of birth and her parent's names. I had previously not known about Hohenweg belonging to the Hornberg parish, so I was stumped. I had noticed some Winkler's within the Gutach records, but I didn't give it much note considering I couldn't find Catharina's baptism. So I ordered the Hornberg records, since I knew that Hohenweg was near the border between the two towns, and low-and-behold.. there was Catharina's baptism record!

The second record I searched for, was the marriage record of her parents: Johann Jacob Beilharz and Barbara Winkler. They were married on 04 Sept 1759 in Hornberg. Johann Jacob was listed as a "viduus" (a widow) and Barbara, as the daughter of Conrad Winkler. No towns were mentioned, so you assume they were from the Hornberg parish.

So who was this deceased wife of Johann Jacob, and what was her name? I found her death recorded on 07 May 1758. She was listed as Lucia, the wife of Johann Jacob "Beylhartz", a day-laborer "auf der Hohenweg", aged 44 years old. I'm now able to guesstimate (I love that word!) approximate birth years for Lucia, as well as Johann Jacob (roughly). I have since found a small handful of children born to Johann Jacob and Lucia, as well as Johann Jacob and Barbara. Most of the children share the same godparents.

While searching for the death of Johann Jacob's first wife Lucia, I stumbled upon a death record on 10 Dec 1758, for a two month old child named Barbara. She was an illegitimate daughter of a Barbara "Winckler". This peaked my interest, as the child was born nine months prior to my Johann Jacob Beilharz and Barbara Winkler getting married. Illegitimate children were common prior to marriages. So off I went, looking for this child's baptism record; she was born 11 Sept 1758. Her mother is listed as Barbara "Winckler", a day-laborer's daughter from Gutach! Those Winkler's I had noticed in the Gutach records years ago, really were MY Winkler's! The godparents of this child helped verify that the mother, Barbara Winkler, was MY Barbara Winkler. Interestingly enough, the birth entry actually listed the biological father.. who must have recognized the child as his own. He was Johann Blum of Gutach. A very common surname in that town, of which I descend from FIVE times! And you thought the deep south of America was incestuous. Ha!

Now knowing that Barbara Winkler was from Gutach all along, I went out searching for her baptism record. And found it easily enough, on 20 Mar 1736. Barbara was the youngest of five children, all born in Gutach. She was the daughter of Conrad Winkler (which we knew from her marriage record) and Catharina. Catharina! The name of my 8th-great-grandmother on my direct maternal line! Yippee! Not being content knowing just her first name, I went looking for Conrad and Catharina's marriage record. They were married on 04 May 1724 in Gutach. Conrad was the son of Hans Winkler and Catharina was the daughter of Georg Aberle, both fathers being day-laborers. Catharina and her father Georg Aberle were from a town that I'm not familiar with, and honestly had a very hard time reading. Which is very uncommon with me and these Gutach records.. I mean, I've been researching in them since 2004! I know these records like the back of my hand!

I was able to find the baptism for Conrad Winkler easily enough, on 08 Mar 1704, in Gutach. He was listed as the son of Hans and Barbara Winkler, day-laborers in Sulzbach, a community within Gutach. Finding baptisms for siblings of Conrad, I noticed that Hans and Barbara Winkler moved around quite a bit within the Gutach parish, moving from community to community between the birth of every child. Work must have been hard to come by, being day-laborers at that time. What I wasn't able to find, was a baptism for Catharina Aberle, Conrad Winkler's wife. It was no-where to be found, nor any baptisms for any children of a Georg Aberle within the Gutach parish at all. But therein lies a clue with her daughter Barbara Winkler's baptism record in 1736. Her first two godparents (there were usually three; two men and one woman) were a Jacob Blum and a Conrad Aberle. Jacob Blum was a day-laborer in Offenbach, a community within Hornberg. Conrad Aberle, whom I'm assuming is a blood-connection to Barbara's mother (Catharina Aberle), was a miller "in Hornberg".

I strongly believe that I'll find Catharina Aberle's baptism within the Hornberg parish.. and the name of my 9th-great-grandmother! The Hornberg parish records begin in the 1630's, nearly 100 years prior to Catharina Aberle's marriage in Gutach, so if I'm lucky I may find two.. or even three.. more generations! Hopefully more to come on Tuesday; cross your fingers, folks!

Today is my birthday and I'm now 24! I thought it'd be neat to search my database and see who all was also born on May 30th. Here is what I found:

Acker, Mary Jane:
She was born 30 May 1864 in Pickens County, Alabama to Baylis Grace Acker and Elizabeth Frances Clardy. She was married to my 1st cousin 4 times removed Lewis Banks Rodgers, Sr., on 04 Jan 1883 in Cherokee County, Texas. They had eleven children from 1883 to 1908!

Berzeviczy de Berzevicze, Mária:
She was born on 30 May 1895 in Eperjes, Sáros megye, Hungary. Her father was Elek Berzeviczy de Berzevicze and her mother was Anna Hrabéczy de Vágujhely. Mária is a very distant cousin of mine, and to date I'm related to her three times:
*9th cousin, 3 times removed
*11th cousin, 2 times removed
*12th cousin, 2 times removed

Blum, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1786 in Sulzbach, a tiny community in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Conrad Blum and Anna Maria Lauble. Georg's paternal 3rd-great-grandparents Christian and Magdalena Blum (born in 1590's) are my 10th-great-grandparents. Georg is my 4th cousin, 7 times removed.

Bodogh, Eugene John
Eugene was born 30 May 1912 in Alpha, Warren County, New Jersey. He was born to Kálmán Bódogh and Paulina Szankó. Kálmán was born in Nemesszalók, Veszprém megye, Hungary. This line of Bódogh's were a branch of my cousins who left Miskolc in Borsod megye and resettled in Veszprém megye. The earliest members of this branch that I know of are the two brothers János and István. János was the progenitor of the Veszprém megye branch and he was a reverend. He was born about 1809 and died 05 Dec 1880 in Mihályháza, Veszprém megye, Hungary. István was a land-owner in Felsõ-Iregh, Tolna megye, Hungary. I'm not sure if he had any children or descendants. I believe the two brothers may have been born in Miskolc.

Cielewich, Edmund Edward
Edmund was born 30 May 1899 in Medina, Orleans County, New York. His parents are William P. Cielewich and Anna C. Gottovi. I also descend from the Gottovi family, and Anna is my 2nd cousin, 5 times removed.

Savoy-Carignano, King Amadeus I of Spain
He was born 30 May 1845 to King Victor Emanuele II of Italy and his wife Maria Adelaide Habsburg-Lotharingen. I'm related to King Amadeus I of Spain through countless connections, but our closest link is 15th cousins, 9 times removed through our ancestor Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland. Amadeus's wife was Maria Laetitia Bonaparte, the great-niece of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Erwin, William Armstrong
He was born 30 May 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He was the son of James William Erwin, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Rodgers. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph Rodgers and Elizabeth Donaldson. My 5th-great-grandfather James Rodgers, is the brother of Joseph.

Habsburg, Claudia Felicitas
She was born 30 May 1653 to Ferdinand Charles Habsburg and Anna Medici. She was the wife of Leopold I, King of Hungry and Holy Roman Emperor. Claudia is a prime example of the extent of inbreeding with the royalty of Europe. Her paternal grandfather is the brother of her maternal grandmother. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of her maternal grandfather. Her paternal great-grandparents are the exact same as her maternal great-grandparents. It doesn't help her case that her ancestors married into more Habsburg and Medici lines. Our closest line of connection makes us 11th cousins, 10 times removed.

Kolpack, Herman Gustav
He was born 30 May 1860 in Western Prussia, Germany. He was the son of Christoph Kolpack and Karolina Majewska. Herman Gustav is the grandfather of Milton, the husband of my grandmother's step-sister, Gloria Flemming.

Porkoláb, Erzsébet
She was born 30 May 1835 in Tiszadob, to Lajos Porkoláb and Borbála Szabados. Erzsébet is my 4th cousin, 4 times removed.

Porkoláb, László
He was born 30 May 1855 in Tiszadob, to György Porkoláb and Erzsébet Tamási. I'm related to László through both the Porkoláb and Bódogh families. His paternal grandmother is my 5th great-aunt.

Rodgers, Kenneth Orman
He was born 30 May 1919 in Montgomery County, Mississippi to Norman Lester Rodgers and Myrtle Pearl Bennett. Norman is the brother of my great-grandfather Fred Lamar Rodgers. Myrtle is my 2nd cousin, 4 times removed (twice, as her mother and father were first cousins).

Summ, Conrad
Conrad was born 30 May 1850 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johann Georg Summ and Anna Maria Schondelmaier. They were the owners at one point in time of the house called Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach. The house was passed onto Conrad's brother Jakob and then onto Jakob's daughter Christina. She was the last owner of the house until it became a museum. Conrad is the brother of my 3rd-great-grandfather Johann Georg Summ, who married Maria Blum.

Wöhrle, Georg
Georg was born 30 May 1722 in Gutach, Ortenau district, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Johannes Wöhrle, a bauer in the community Herrenbach, and Maria Breithaupt, my 1st cousin, 10 times removed. Georg was married to Barbara Schüssele, on 25 May 1745 in Gutach. Barbara is my 2nd cousin, 9 times removed.

My First Entry; February 13, 2008

This is the first entry in my new genealogy blog I've recently decided to write. In this blog I'll discuss things I come across during my research, like websites, databases, people connected to the family tree.. just things that I find useful in my daily scouring of the internet and of records.

In my first blog I wanted to discuss my family tree and the immense amount of information in my database. As of right now, writing this blog, I have 49,943 individuals in my database. I want to explain who all of these people are. In my database I of course have my direct lineage for all of my ancestors.. but I also like to research the families and descendants of the siblings of my ancestors. This is where a big portion of the individuals come from.

The major portion of my database comes from the extensive amount of information on noble and royal families. I am descended from nobility on my father's side (which you will read below) and royalty on my mother's side. I have a love and an obsession for all things to do with nobility (mostly Hungarian), royalty and monarchies in Europe, so I naturally have nearly every single King or Queen of every country of Europe in my database. As of my information right now, I currently descend from 234 Kings or Queens of Europe.. they're from Armenia, Bohemia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Serbia, Spain and Sweden. So naturally, this makes me related to every single European monarch or royal family.

My Father's side:
The ethnicities of my father's side is comprised of Hungarian and Polish.

From the oldest-known progenitor of the Gombash line, a György Gombás who was born in the 1690's, I have a total of 294 descendants. I also have 197 individuals from Büdszentmihály, the village Alex Gombash came from.

The other branch is Eszter Tóth, Alex Gombash's wife. The oldest-known progenitor of the Tóth line, a Mihály Tóth who was alive during the early to mid-1700's, currently has a total of 355 descendants. I also have 1,255 individuals from Tiszadob, the village Eszter Tóth came from.

I have lacked on the research in Büdszentmihály, but I have done extensive research in Tiszadob. This is because Eszter Tóth comes from an extremely noble background; each of her four grandparents were of noble birth. There were two Tóth families, the Bódogh family and the Szük family.

There is a family story or legend that says one of our families was descended from a King from around 1500, and the earlier surname of the family as 'Matis'. We have a distant cousin of ours who lives in Ohio; we're related to her through the Bódogh and Tóth families. Her family also has a family story or legend, and it says that a prince had married a gypsy and he therefore lost all inheritance rights (what a love story, ya?!). If you know anything about either of these stories, or know who might, please contact me.

Tóth is the single most common surname in Hungary, and it means 'Slovak' (the ethnicity).

The Bódogh's were granted a patent of nobility and a coat of arms in 1611 by King Matthias II. The Bódogh name means 'happy'. I currently have 1,370 descendants of the Bódogh family and 374 individuals that carry the surname. This family is the main focus of all my research.

The Szük's were granted a patent of nobility and a coat of arms in 1636 by King Ferdinand II. The Szük name means 'narrow' or 'thin'.

My Mother's side:
As proud as I am of my heritage on my father's side, I am by far more proud of my heritage on my mother's side. The ethnicities of my mother's side is comprised of Bohemian, English, German, Irish, Native American, Scottish and Welsh. Her family consists of individuals involved in the Civil War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, WWI and WWII. It has deeply rooted Native American ancestry connected to the beginning of the United States and Jamestown, royalty from all over Europe, and vast land owners in Germany.

The Rodgers family has been in America since the early 1700's. The oldest-known progenitor is a James Rodgers, who died around 1760 in Virginia. I currently have 1,953 descendants for him in my database, and 552 of them bearing the Rodgers surname.

The Stuempges have an interesting quirk from their early beginning. The oldest-known Stuempges progenitor is a Vit Stümpges, who lived from 1545 to 1592. It is through his granddaughter Giertgen Stümpges (1617-after 1693) that the Stuempges carry their surname. She was married to a Thönis am Bleeckkamp and they had 9 children. Their children carried the Stümpges surname.. their mother's name.. not their father's.

The one last main portion of my research is the Summ/Blum family, from Gutach, Germany. I have many lines dating back to the early, mid or late 1500's. I currently have 928 individuals from Gutach. Our ancestor John George Summ who married Maria Blum, came from a family that owned a house called 'Vogtsbauernhof' in Gutach. This house is currently the main focus point of a large museum in Gutach.
