St. Stephen's Day & My Connection To The King

In honor of St. Stephen's day in Hungary, I thought it'd be neat to highlight my own connection to the well-known Saint and first King of Hungary. My own 24th-great-grandmother was Szabina, Princess of Hungary. She belonged to the Árpád dynasty and was the daughter of King Béla IV and his wife Maria Laskaris.

King St. Stephen was connected to Szabina through two lines of descent: through both Szabina's mother and father. Through Szabina's father, St. Stephen was her 7th-great-uncle. Through Szabina's mother, St. Stephen was her 6th-great-uncle. You can see the connection in the chart to the right:

  1. Your 24th-great-grandmother? King St. Stephen of Hungary? I'm jealous, Nick! When you get bored will you work on MY Hungarian family tree? ;)

  2. Haha I'd love to if you ever need help, Lisa. Did you know FamilySearch added Hungarian Civil Registration records up? Gelej is there! Let me know if you need some searching done. :)

  3. Dear Nick, I found Szabina as a daughter of King Bela IV only in the English Wikipedia, where she was added in July 2010 by someone. There is a long discussion on this page with the result that she is not his daughter. Do you have more information about her?
    Best regards

  4. Hi Hermann,
I'm actually the submitter for the Szabina information on Wikipedia. I took it from my Hungarian nobility resources, which most can be found online at Google Books. She is found (not always) in pedigree charts for the Árpád family from Hungarians sources and resources. She can be found in documents from the 13th century, describing her as the wife of Majos, Palatine of Hungary, and that she was a sister to the king of Hungary (can't recall which one off-hand).

  5. So, if you are related to Szabina and she is the daughter of King Bela IV, then you are related to King Bela IV at least on two lines. The second one is from you to Barbara Maresh (a fourth cousin of your mother), to her husband Jerry Mulkins and then straight 28 generations directly to King Bela IV.
    Best regards, Hermann
PS I'm related to Rupert Hartenthaler, the husband of Doris Stuempges (a first cousin of your grandmother)

  6. I completely forgot we had the Hartenthaler-Stuempges connection! I'm not sure who Barbara Maresh and her husband Jerry Mulkins are, although Jerry's name does sound familiar for some reason. How am I related to Barbara through my mother?

As for King Béla IV, I only descend from him once.. but I have dozens and dozens of connections to him as a cousin, as I descend through multiple lines of the Árpád family. For instance: I descend from King Béla IV's aunt Margit Árpád, as well.. so I descend from Béla IV's grandfather (Béla III) through two lines.

  7. Hi Nick,
Princess Szabina is my 23rd great grandmother via the Bathori, Kallay, Eordogh/Abranyi families. I found a lot of confilict pertaining to her parentage. The Medievil Land Project identified her parents as Prince Andras (Son of King Andras II & Queen Gertrude) & her mother as Princess Helena Mstislanva of Novgorod. King Bela IV then being her paternal uncle.

  8. Hi Nick,
Princess Szabina is my 23rd great grandmother via the Bathori, Kallay de Nagy Kallo, Eordogh/Abranyi families. I discovered a lot of conflict regarding her parentage but found the Medievil Lands Project to be the most authoritative & scholarly. This body of work identifies Szabina as the daughter of Prince Andras (son of King Andras II & Queen Gertrude) & Princess Helena Mstislavna of Novgorod. Many sources are given & analaysed. Bela the IV would therefore be the paternal uncle of Szabina.
    regards

  9. Greetings nice people,
What good feelings I have to discover that today is Saint Stephen's Day in Hungary! Saint Margaret of Scotland, descendant of Saint Stephen, is my connection to Saint King Stephen. My sources are the two Douglas Richardson books (that he edited with a great staff) and the Weis book on colonial American families descended from nobility. My root colonial ancestors are Gov. Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke of the Massachusetts Bay colony. Lately I have been researching saints in my ancestry because of my love of the Eucharist and my desire to become Catholic.
    Peace and all good,
    Paul
